Published: September 1990

The filamentous non-heterocystous cyanobacterium Oscillatoria limosa was subjected to Western blot analyses using two antisera raised against the small subunit (Fe-protein) of the nitrogenase complex. Two polypeptides were recognized in nitrogen-fixing cultures irrespective of the antiserum used while no bands were detectable in nitrate-grown cultures. The apparent molecular weights of the two polypeptides were approximately 40.5 and 39.5 kDa respectively, with the former, probably an inactive form, dominating. In situ immunogold electron microscopy was used to reveal the cellular and subcellular localization on the Fe-protein. All cells of the trichomes of nitrogen-fixing O. limosa showed a dense label. The label was homogeneously distributed throughout the cytoplasm including the thylakoid area. Nitrate-grown cultures contained a very low label.

Marine cyanobacteria offer a rich source of varied natural products with both chemical and biological diversity. () is a filamentous non-heterocystous marine cyanobacterium from Oscillatoriaceae family. In this investigation, we have unveiled bioactive extracts from using two distinct solvent systems, revealing significant anticancer properties.

The patterns of biogeographic distribution and assembly processes of microbiota are of vital importance for understanding ecological adaptation and functioning maintenance. However, the role of morphological characteristics in microbial assembly is still poorly ascertained. Here, by integrating high-throughput sequencing and robust extrapolation of traits, we investigated taxonomic and phylogenetic turnovers of various cyanobacterial morphotypes in biocrusts to evaluate the contributions of deterministic and stochastic processes across a large scale of drylands in northwestern China.

C-phycocyanin (C-PC), the integral blue-green algae (BGA) constituent has been substantially delineated for its biological attributes. Numerous reports have illustrated differential extraction and purification techniques for C-PC, however, there exists paucity in a broadly accepted process of its isolation. In the present study, we reported a highly selective C-PC purification and characterization method from nontoxic, filamentous and non-heterocystous cyanobacterium Plectonema sp.

Phytoplankton is one of the five biological quality elements used in the assessment of the ecological status of surface waters according to the European Water Framework Directive established in 2000. In this study, we determined the ecological status of three small and shallow lakes in the Polesie Plain, Eastern Poland, by using indices based on phytoplankton assemblages. The predominant phytoplankton of all three lakes were filamentous cyanobacteria, both heterocystous and non-heterocystous, represented by the genera , , and .
