Article Synopsis
  • Photosynthesis reacts dynamically to changing environmental conditions like light and temperature, but current measurement techniques often lead to inaccurate estimates by focusing on steady-state conditions.
  • A study using over 700,000 chlorophyll fluorescence measurements in four crop species revealed that quantum efficiency in photosynthesis is influenced by light and affected by canopy structure, while a new parameter linked to electron transport efficiency is highly responsive to temperature.
  • The research highlights the potential for improved photosynthetic modeling and plant breeding by accurately capturing the plants' responses to environmental fluctuations throughout their growth seasons.

Exploring new alleles for frost tolerance in winter rye.

Theor Appl Genet

October 2017

TUM School of Life Sciences, Plant Breeding, Technical University of Munich, Liesel-Beckmann-Str. 2, 85354, Freising, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • Rye genetic resources are important for enhancing frost tolerance in winter rye breeding programs, crucial for cereal production in cold regions.
  • The study identified key genomic regions (QTL) associated with frost tolerance through mapping, utilizing a hybrid of a highly frost-resistant Canadian rye and a European elite line.
  • By employing genomic prediction models that prioritize the Fr-R2 locus, breeders can effectively select candidates with improved frost tolerance, leveraging both large and small QTL effects.

The barley Frost resistance-H2 locus.

Funct Integr Genomics

March 2014

Department of Life Sciences, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Via Amendola 2, Pad. Besta, 42122, Reggio Emilia, Italy,

Frost resistance-H2 (Fr-H2) is a major QTL affecting freezing tolerance in barley, yet its molecular basis is still not clearly understood. To gain a better insight into the structural characterization of the locus, a high-resolution linkage map developed from the Nure × Tremois cross was initially implemented to map 13 loci which divided the 0.602 cM total genetic distance into ten recombination segments.

Fumonisins are mycotoxins produced by the maize pathogen Gibberella fujikuroi mating population A and frequently contaminate maize. Wild-type G. fujikuroi produces four B-series fumonisins, FB1, FB2, FR3 and FB4.

A male-sterile, female-sterile soybean mutant (w4-m sterile) was identified among progeny of germinal revertants of a gene-tagging study. Our objectives were to determine the genetics (inheritance, allelism, and linkage) and the cytology (microsporogenesis and microgametogenesis) of the w4-m sterile. The mutant was inherited as a single recessive nuclear gene and was nonallelic to known male-sterile, female-sterile mutants st2 st2, st3 st3, st4 st4, st5 st5, and st6 st6 st7 st7.
