Familial syndromes associated with intracranial tumours: a review.

Childs Nerv Syst

Department of Clinical Neurological Sciences, Western University, 800 Commissioners Road East, London, ON, N6A 5W9, Canada,

Published: January 2014

Background: Most cancers of the central nervous system (CNS) occur sporadically in the absence of any known underlying familial disorder or multi-systemic syndrome. Several syndromes are associated with CNS malignancies, however, and their recognition has significant implications for patient management and prognosis. Patients with syndrome-associated CNS malignancies often have multiple tumours (either confined to one region or distributed throughout the body), with similar or different histology.

Objective: This review examines syndromes that are strongly associated with CNS cancers: the phakomatosis syndromes, familial syndromes such as Li-Fraumeni and familial polyposis syndromes and dyschondroplasia.

Call to Improve Coding of Cancer-Associated Cachexia.

JCO Oncol Pract

January 2025

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Cold Spring Harbor, NY.

Cachexia is a systemic wasting syndrome prevalent in patients with cancer that significantly affects quality of life, health care costs, and therapeutic outcomes. Despite its clinical importance, cachexia is rarely formally diagnosed. This deficiency presents a challenge for effective patient management and care, health care resource allocation, and the advancement of therapeutic approaches.

Background: Platelet recovery was an important prognostic indicator in severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS). This study focused on risk factors affecting platelet recovery in surviving SFTS patients, which can assist clinicians in the early screening of patients associated with a greater risk of mortality.

Method: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of SFTS patients admitted to Yantai Qishan Hospital throughout 2023.

Rett syndrome (RTT) is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by mutations in the gene, potentially disrupting lipid metabolism and leading to dyslipidemia (DLD) and steatotic liver disease (SLD). Although SLD has been described in RTT mouse models, it remains undocumented in humans. We herein describe a 24-year-old woman with RTT who was evaluated for abnormal liver enzymes.

Calcium-mediated mitochondrial fission and mitophagy drive glycolysis to facilitate arterivirus proliferation.

PLoS Pathog

Mitochondria, recognized as the "powerhouse" of cells, play a vital role in generating cellular energy through dynamic processes such as fission and fusion. Viruses have evolved mechanisms to hijack mitochondrial function for their survival and proliferation. Here, we report that infection with the swine arterivirus porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), manipulates mitochondria calcium ions (Ca2+) to induce mitochondrial fission and mitophagy, thereby reprogramming cellular energy metabolism to facilitate its own replication.

Background: The July effect in US teaching hospitals has been studied with conflicting results. We aimed to evaluate the effect of physician turnover in July on the clinical outcomes of patients hospitalized with cirrhosis.

Methods: We utilized the Nationwide Inpatient Sample database (2016-2019) to identify patients hospitalized with cirrhosis and liver-related complications (variceal bleeding, hepatorenal syndrome, acute-on-chronic liver failure).
