Asymmetric synthesis of α-quaternary chiral lactam derivatives as novel anticancer agents and evaluation of their cytotoxic potentials and spectrums are reported. Among the developed lactam derivatives, the most active new compounds (S)-4m and (S)-4n synthesized via asymmetric phase-transfer catalytic alkylation in very high optical yields (98 % ee) show promising in vitro anticancer activities with low micromolar IC50 values against colon, uterus, lung, and breast human cancer cells.

Background: Beta-lactams remain the first-line treatment of infections despite the increasing global prevalence of penicillin-resistant/non-susceptible strains. We conducted a cross-sectional household survey in a rural community in northern Vietnam in 2018-2019 to provide prevalence estimates of penicillin non-susceptible (PNSP) carriage and to investigate behavioural and environmental factors associated with PNSP colonization. The data presented will inform the design of a large trial of population-based interventions targeting inappropriate antibiotic use.

Whole Genome Sequencing and Comparative Genomics Analysis of Goat-Derived .

Genes (Basel)

December 2024

Hainan Key Lab of Tropical Animal Reproduction, Breeding and Epidemic Disease Research, Animal Genetic Engineering Key Lab of Haikou, Hainan University, Haikou 570228, China.

This research aims to enhance the genomic database of by identifying virulence genes through the whole genome sequencing and comparative analysis of a goat-derived (KOHN1) strain, while clarifying the relationship between its genetic evolution and virulence, ultimately providing a theoretical foundation for clinical prevention and diagnosis. Third-generation Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) sequencing and second-generation Illumina sequencing were used to sequence the strain and analyze the database annotations. Screening for 10 virulence genes was conducted using PCR.

Although is a key cause of subclinical mastitis in Danish dairy cows, its sensitivity to antimicrobials remains unexplored. Here, we analyzed sixty isolates derived from 42 dairy cows across six conventional dairy herds in Denmark. Phenotypic resistance was measured by antimicrobial susceptibility testing and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) analysis, and genotypic resistance was examined through whole-genome sequencing and identification of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs).

Background: The evolving infant gut microbiome influences host immune development and later health outcomes. Early antibiotic exposure could impact microbiome development and contribute to poor outcomes. Here, we use a prospective longitudinal birth cohort of n = 323 healthy term African American children to determine the association between antibiotic exposure and the gut microbiome through shotgun metagenomics sequencing as well as bile acid profiles through liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry.

Organoselenium compounds have been recognized as potential therapeutic agents against several diseases. Specifically, the incorporation of selenium into natural products has been reported to produce positive synergistic biological effects. We report herein the one-pot reaction of the natural monoterpenoid (-)-carvone with selenium bromide, which yields mentoselenophenone 1, together with minor amounts of phenols 2 and 3.
