Unlabelled: CTnDOT is a 65-kb conjugative transposon that is found in Bacteroides spp., which are one of the more abundant members within the lower human gastrointestinal tract. CTnDOT encodes resistance to the antibiotics erythromycin and tetracycline (Tc). An interesting feature of CTnDOT is that exposure to low levels of Tc induces a cascade of events that ultimately results in CTnDOT conjugative transfer. However, Tc is apparently not a switch that activates transfer but rather a signal that appears to override a series of negative regulators that inhibit premature excision and transfer of CTnDOT. In this minireview, we summarize over 20 years of research that focused on elucidating the highly coordinated regulation of excision, mobilization, and transfer of CTnDOT.

Importance: Bacteroides spp. are abundant commensals in the human colon, but they are also considered opportunistic pathogens, as they can cause life-threatening infections if they should escape the colon. Bacteroides spp. are the most common cause of anaerobic infections and are rather difficult to treat due to the prevalence of antibiotic resistance within this genus. Today over 80% of Bacteroides are resistant to tetracycline (Tc), and a study looking at both clinical and community isolates demonstrated that this resistance was specifically due to the conjugative transposon CTnDOT.

Unlabelled: Microbiota-released extracellular vesicles (MEVs) have emerged as a key player in intercellular signaling. However, their involvement in the gut-brain axis has been poorly investigated. We hypothesize that MEVs cross host cellular barriers and deliver their cargoes of bioactive compounds to the brain.

The purpose of the current study was to investigate the effects of gum Arabic supplementation on short-chain fatty acids, cecal microbiota, immune-related gene expression, and small intestinal morphology in post-hatched broiler chicks. On the day of hatching, four hundred thirty-two commercial male broiler chicks were randomly allocated into six treatments with twelve cages as replicates of six chicks each for 24 days. Dietary treatments (T1 to T6) were supplemented with 0.

Background: Coronary thrombosis events continue to be the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Recently, emerging evidence has highlighted the role of gut microbiota in cardiovascular disease, but few studies have systematically investigated the gut microbiota variation associated with atherothrombosis.

Methods: We conducted multi-omics analysis (metagenomics sequencing and serum metabolomics) on 146 subjects from Peking Union Medical College Hospital-Coronary Artery Disease (PUMCH-CAD) cohort.

Article Synopsis
  • - The health and productivity of sheep infected with gastrointestinal helminths, particularly nematodes like Trichuris ovis, are negatively affected, prompting the need to understand host-parasite-microbiome interactions for better management strategies.
  • - This study focused on the caecal microbiome of Kashmir Merino sheep, analyzing samples from both infected and non-infected individuals, revealing significant differences in microbial communities via 16S rRNA metagenomic analysis.
  • - Findings showed that T. ovis infection leads to changes in the caecal microbiome, with an increase in potentially harmful bacteria and a decrease in beneficial ones, emphasizing the intricate relationship between hosts, parasites, and their microbiomes.
