Mobile genes coding for efflux-mediated antimicrobial resistance in Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

Int J Antimicrob Agents

CODA-CERVA-VAR, Groeselenberg 99, B-1180 Ukkel, Brussels, Belgium.

Efflux mechanisms that account for resistance to a variety of antimicrobial agents are commonly found in a wide range of bacteria. Two major groups of efflux systems are known, specific exporters and transporters conferring multidrug resistance (MDR). The MDR systems are able to remove antimicrobials of different classes from the bacterial cell and occasionally play a role in the intrinsic resistance of some bacteria to certain antimicrobials.

Effectiveness of an antibiotic cost containment measure.

Can J Hosp Pharm

June 1990

University Hospital, Vancouver, British Columbia V6T 2B5.

University Hospital, University of British Columbia (UBC) Site, a 600-bed teaching hospital in Vancouver, British Columbia, adopted several cost containment measures on August 2, 1988 in an attempt to limit the rise in antibiotic expenditures. One cost containment measure involved extending the dosing intervals of cefazolin, clindamycin and metronidazole by a pharmacy-based automatic dosing interval interchange. Cefazolin and clindamycin orders were changed to an every eight-hour dosing schedule, and metronidazole orders to an every 12-hour schedule.
