Multicationic ruthenium phthalocyanines as photosensitizers for photodynamic inactivation of multiresistant microbes.

Eur J Med Chem

December 2024

Departamento de Química Orgánica, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Cantoblanco, 28049, Madrid, Spain; Institute for Advanced Research in Chemical Sciences (IAdChem), Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Cantoblanco, 28049, Madrid, Spain. Electronic address:

Four photosensitizers PS1a-PS4a consisting in multicationic ruthenium(II) phthalocyanines (RuPcs) have been evaluated in photodynamic inactivation (PDI) of multiresistant microorganisms. The RuPcs, bearing from 4 to 12 terminal ammonium salts, have been designed to target the microorganisms cytoplasmic cell membrane and display high singlet oxygen quantum yields. In addition, PS3a and PS4a were conceived to exhibit multi-target localization by endowing them with amphiphilic character, using two different structural approaches.

Piezoelectric materials directly convert between electrical and mechanical energies. They are used as transducers in applications such as nano-positioning and ultrasound imaging. Improving the properties of these devices requires piezoelectric materials capable of delivering a large longitudinal strain on the application of an electric field.

Drought stress significantly impacts wheat productivity, but plant growth regulators may help mitigate these effects. This study examined the influence of gibberellic acid (GA3) and abscisic acid (ABA) on wheat (Triticum aestivum L., CV: Giza 171) growth and yield under different water regimes.

Anodic Activation of Prussian Blue Analog Leads to Highly Active Cobalt-Doped Nickel (Oxy)Hydroxide for Organic Oxidation Reactions.

Chemistry

December 2024

Material Chemistry Group for Thin Film Catalysis, CatLab, Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie, Albert-Einstein-Str. 15, 12489, Berlin, Germany.

Water-assisted electrocatalytic oxidation of alcohols into valuable chemicals is a promising strategy to circumvent the sluggish kinetics of water oxidation, while also reducing cell voltage and improving energy efficiency. Recently, transition metal (TM)-based catalysts have been investigated for anodic alcohol oxidation, but success has been limited due to competition from the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) within the working regime. In this study, NiCo-based Prussian blue analog (PBA) was electrochemically activated at the anodic potential to produce a Co-Ni(O)OH active catalyst with a nanosheet-like architecture.

Environmental drivers of stream metabolism in a middle TN headwater stream.

PLoS One

December 2024

Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee, United States of America.

Monitoring the seasonal and diurnal variations in headwater stream metabolic regimes can provide critical information for understanding how ecosystems will respond to future environmental changes. In East Fork Creek, a headwater stream in middle Tennessee, week-long field campaigns were set up each month from May 2022 to May 2023 to collect stream metabolism estimators. In a more extensive field campaign from July 2-5 in 2022, diel signals were observed for temperature, pH, turbidity, and concentrations of Ca, Mg, K, Se, Fe, Ba, chloride, nitrate, DIC, DO, DOC, and total algae.
