We report a highly anisotropic in-plane magnetoresistance (MR) in graphite that possesses in-plane parallel line-like structural defects. In a current direction perpendicular to the line defects (LD), MR is negative and linear in low fields with a crossover to a positive MR at higher fields, while in a current direction parallel to LD, we observed a giant super-linear positive MR. These extraordinary MRs are respectively explained by a hopping magnetoresistance via non-zero angular momentum orbitals, and by the magnetoresistance of inhomogeneous media. The linear negative orbital MR is a unique signature of the broken time-reversal symmetry (TRS). We discuss the origin of the disorder-induced TRS-breaking in graphite.

Layered magnets are stand-out materials because of their range of functional properties that can be controlled by external stimuli. Regretfully, the class of such compounds is rather narrow, prompting the search for new members. Graphitization─stabilization of layered graphitic structures in the 2D limit─is being discussed for cubic materials.

Proposal for All-Electrical Skyrmion Detection in van der Waals Tunnel Junctions.

Institute of Theoretical Physics and Astrophysics, University of Kiel, Leibnizstrasse 15, 24098 Kiel, Germany.

A major challenge for magnetic skyrmions in atomically thin van der Waals (vdW) materials is reliable skyrmion detection. Here, based on rigorous first-principles calculations, we show that all-electrical skyrmion detection is feasible in two-dimensional vdW magnets via scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and in planar tunnel junctions. We use the nonequilibrium Green's function method for quantum transport in planar junctions, including self-energy due to electrodes and working conditions, going beyond the standard Tersoff-Hamann approximation.

van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnetic heterojunctions, characterized by an ultraclean device interface and the absence of lattice matching, have emerged as indispensable and efficient building blocks for future spintronic devices. In this study, we present a seldom observed antisymmetric magnetoresistance (MR) behavior with three distinctive resistance states in a lateral van der Waals (vdW) structure comprising FeGeTe (FGT)/graphite/FGT. In contrast to traditional spin valves governed by the magnetization configurations of ferromagnetic electrodes (FEs), this distinct feature can be attributed to the interaction between FGT and the FGT/graphite interface, which is primarily influenced by the internal spin-momentum locking effect.

Large tunneling magnetoresistance in van der Waals magnetic tunnel junctions based on FeCl films with interlayer antiferromagnetic couplings.

Antiferromagnets (AFMs) are some of the most promising candidates for next-generation magnetic memory technology owing to their advantages over conventional ferromagnets (FMs), such as zero stray field and THz-range magnetic resonance frequency. Motivated by the recent synthesis of FeCl films with interlayer AFM and intralayer FM couplings, we investigated the magnetic properties of few-layer FeCl and the spin-dependent transmissions of graphite/bilayer FeCl/graphite and Au/-layer FeCl/Au magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) using first-principles calculations combined with the nonequilibrium Green's function. The interlayer AFM coupling of FeCl is certified to be stable and independent of the stacking orders and relative displacement between layers.

Physical Vapor Transport Growth of Antiferromagnetic CrCl Flakes Down to Monolayer Thickness.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

January 2023

Department of Physics and Astronomy & Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Lincoln, NE, 68588-0299, USA.

The van der Waals magnets CrX (X = I, Br, and Cl) exhibit highly tunable magnetic properties and are promising candidates for developing novel two-dimensional (2D) spintronic devices such as magnetic tunnel junctions and spin tunneling transistors. Previous studies of the antiferromagnetic CrCl have mainly focused on mechanically exfoliated samples. Controlled synthesis of high quality atomically thin flakes is critical for their technological implementation but has not been achieved to date.
