The monolayer structures and conformational ordering of cationic surfactants including the biodegradable quaternary ammonium molecules have been systematically characterized by π-A isotherm, surface potential, atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy. It was found that the monolayer of the typical dialkyl dimethylammonium on the water surface was less densely packed along with many conformational gauche defects. The packing density and ordering of these monolayers were improved as halide ions were added to the subphase. A similar condensation effect was also observed when amide or ester groups are present in the alkyl tails of the surfactant. These results are discussed on the basis of the repulsive electrostatic interactions between the terminal ammonium moieties, the hydrogen bonding between the functional groups in the alkyl chains, as well as the flexibility of the alkyl chains in these surfactants. The present study is crucial to understanding the relationship between the interfacial structures and the functionalities of the biodegradable quaternary ammonium surfactants.

Orally targeting nanostrategies of multiple nutraceuticals have attracted increasing attention in ulcerative colitis (UC) therapy for superior patient compliance, cost-effectiveness, and biocompatibility. However, the actual targeting delivery and bioefficacy of nutraceuticals are extremely restricted by their poor solubility, interior gastrointestinal retention, and base permeability. Herein, we developed controllable colon-targeting nanoparticles (NPs) composed of a quaternary ammonium chitosan (HTCC) shell and succinic acid-modified γ-cyclodextrin (SACD) core for precise UC treatment.

Towards Accurate Biocompatibility: Rethinking Cytotoxicity Evaluation for Biodegradable Magnesium Alloys in Biomedical Applications.

Magnesium and its alloys represent promising candidates for biomedical implants due to their biodegradability and mechanical properties, which are similar to natural bone. However, their rapid degradation process characterized by dynamic pH fluctuations and significant hydrogen gas evolution during biocorrosion adversely affects both in vitro and in vivo assessments. While the ISO 10993-5 and 12 standards provide guidelines for evaluating the in vitro biocompatibility of biodegradable materials, they also introduce testing variability conditions that yield inconsistent results.

Trimethoprim (TMP) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) are bacteriostatic agents, which are co-administered to patients during infection treatment due to their synergetic effects. Once consumed, TMP and SMX end up in wastewater and are directed to municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) which fail to remove these contaminants from municipal wastewater. The discharge of WWTP effluents containing antibiotics in the environment is a major concern for public health as it contributes to the spread of antimicrobial resistance.

Purpose: Corneal pain is one of the most common eye symptoms caused by various types of epithelial injuries, including traumatic abrasion, chemical injury, ulcers, ultraviolet exposure, and infection. However, current therapeutic options for corneal pain are limited. In this study, we synthesized a novel quaternary ammonium compound, N-propylamiodarone bromide (NPA), and employed a rodent model of corneal injury to investigate whether NPA offers prolonged corneal analgesia through transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) channel-mediated selective cellular entry, without hindering corneal epithelial recovery.

In the current study, we dosed Didecyldimethylammonium chloride (DDAC) in mice by pharyngeal aspiration for 28 days or 90 days (weekly) and tried to elucidate the relationship between lamellar body formation and the lesions. When exposed for 28 days (0, 5, 10, 50, and 100 μg/head), all the mice in the 50 and 100 μg/head groups died since Day 2 after the third dosing (Day 16 after the first dosing). Edema, necrosis of bronchiolar and alveolar epithelium, and fibrinous exudate were observed in the lungs of all the dead mice, and chronic inflammatory lesions were observed in the lung tissues of alive mice.
