We studied 15-crown-5 ether mono- and bis(styryl) derivatives of 2,2'-bipyridine ( and ) as a scaffold to construct photoresponsive complexes possessing metallodendrimer structure. The synthesis and optical properties of one dimensional (1D) Ca(2+)-containing and octahedral 3D Zn(2+)-containing complexes with crowned styryl derivatives of 2,2'-bipyridine are described. Bimetallic Ca(2+), Zn(2+)-containing complexes of and possess well-defined structures and particular optical characteristics. The effective size of the complexes was estimated by diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy (DOSY) by measuring translation diffusion coefficients. The NMR data on the compositions of the formed complexes are in full agreement with those obtained by an optical method. The properties of the zinc polypyridyl complexes are modified by intermolecular interactions between the crown ether center and the metal ions, so they are potentially useful in the preparation of chemical sensors.

A mononuclear cadmium(II) complex of formula [Cd(5,5'-dmbipy)(OAc)]·2HO (5,5'-dmbipy = 5,5'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine and OAc = acetato ligand) has been synthesized and characterized by FT-IR, UV-Vis, H-NMR, elemental analysis and single-crystal X-ray structure analysis. The molecular structure of the complex shows a distorted tetragonal antiprism CdNO coordination geometry around the cadmium atom, resulting in coordination by four nitrogen atoms from two 5,5'-dmbipy ligands and four oxygen atoms from two acetate anions. The interaction of this complex to FS-DNA (fish sperm DNA) has also been studied by electronic absorption, fluorescence and gel electrophoresis techniques.

Two novel ruthenium polypyridyl complexes, Ru[(bpy)2(pedppz)](2+) (1) and Ru[(bpy)2(pemitatp)](2+) (2) (bpy = 2'2-bipyridine, pdeppz = 10-(2-(piperidin-1-yl)ethoxy)dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine, pemitatp = 5-methoxy-1-(2-(piperidin-1-yl)ethyl)-isatino[1,2-b]-1,4,8,9-tetraazatriphenylene), bearing large planar π-delocalized aromatic systems with flexible chains have been synthesised and characterised. As expected, these complexes show inhibition towards telomerase by inducing and stabilising the G-quadruplex structure.
