An effective preparation procedure is offered for β-cyclodextrin (bCD) clathrates with volatile guests of moderate hydrophilicity, which otherwise require a finely tuned optimization of the bCD/water/guest ratio. The proposed procedure includes guest exchange in a water-free bCD matrix. As a result, more stable clathrates with a higher inclusion capacity can be prepared than by direct saturation of dried or hydrated bCD. To find an optimal preparation method, the structure-property relationships were studied for four different ways of bCD clathrate formation with guests of varying molecular structure. The study was much simplified by used procedures excluding direct contact of guest and water liquids with bCD. Besides, in clathrate preparation experiments, the thermodynamic activities of water and guest were varied independently, which makes explicit the role of water in this process. Hydration of bCD reduces its inclusion threshold for hydrophobic guests by their activity (relative vapor pressure), giving favorable hydration effect for their inclusion. Besides, water competes with hydrophilic guests for binding sites in bCD at high water activities. Together with bCD dehydration by excess of hydrophilic guests, these observations give a complete thermodynamic picture, which may be fruitful for elaboration of guest encapsulation techniques by cyclodextrins.

In this work, the hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD)/Epicatechin (EC) clathrate compounds were rapidly prepared based on an ultrasound-mediated method, and Polycaprolactone (PCL)/Locust bean gum (LBG) nanofibers loaded clathrate compounds were fabricated by electrostatic spinning (ELS) for fruit packaging. The results of infrared spectrum and crystal type analysis proved that clathrate compounds were successfully prepared. With the addition of clathrate compounds, the diameter of fibers increased from 553.

The defect double perovskite [He □ ][CaNb]F, with helium on its A-site, can be prepared by the insertion of helium into ReO-type CaNbF at high pressure. Upon cooling from 300 to 100 K under 0.4 GPa helium, ∼60% of the A-sites become occupied.

Herein, we introduce a novel composite hydrogel scaffold designed for addressing infectious jaw defects, a significant challenge in clinical settings caused by the inherent limited self-regenerative capacity of bone tissues. The scaffold was engineered from a blend of carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS)/sodium alginate (SA) hydrogel (CSH), β-cyclodextrin/chlorhexidine clathrate (β-CD-CHX), and strontium-nanohydroxyapatite nanoparticles (Sr-nHA). The β-CD-CHX and Sr-nHA components were synthesized using a saturated aqueous solution and a coprecipitation method, respectively.

Lipoic acid trisulfide, a sulfane sulfur-containing trisulfide of α-lipoic acid, holds promise in pharmaceuticals, yet knowledge gaps persist regarding its synthesis, properties, and stability. Here, we synthesized the lipoic acid trisulfide with a purity exceeding 99% from α-lipoic acid on a gram scale and obtained novel β-cyclodextrin clathrates (84%-95% yield). Differential scanning calorimetry confirmed the inclusion of lipoic acid trisulfide in β-cyclodextrins.

Glioma is easy to develop resistance to temozolomide (TMZ). TMZ-resistant glioma secretes interleukin-10 (IL-10) and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β), recruiting regulatory T cell (T) and inhibiting the activity of T cells and natural killer cell (NK cell), subsequently forming an immunosuppressive microenvironment. Oxaliplatin (OXA) greatly inhibits the proliferation of TMZ-resistant glioma cells, but the ability of OXA to cross blood-brain barrier (BBB) is weak.
