Contribution of Blood Biomarkers to Multiple Sclerosis Diagnosis.

Neurol Neuroimmunol Neuroinflamm

March 2025

Servei de Neurologia, Centre d'Esclerosi Múltiple de Catalunya (Cemcat), Institut de Recerca Vall d'Hebron (VHIR), Hospital Universitari Vall d'Hebron, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain.

Background And Objectives: Invasive procedures may delay the diagnostic process in multiple sclerosis (MS). We investigated the added value of serum neurofilament light chain (sNfL), glial fibrillary acidic protein (sGFAP), chitinase-3-like 1 (sCHI3L1), and the immune responses to the Epstein-Barr virus-encoded nuclear antigen 1 to current MS diagnostic criteria.

Methods: In this multicentric study, we selected patients from 2 prospective cohorts presenting a clinically isolated syndrome (CIS).

Introduction: The one-minute sit to stand test (1min-STST) is a field test used to assess functional capacity. It is easily implementable and of significant clinical utility; however, no reference values are currently available for the Chilean population. The objective of this study was to establish reference values for the 1min-STST in a healthy Chilean population.

PET Reporter Probes for Brain Imaging of Transduced Gene and Cell Expression: Status and Challenges.

J Med Chem

January 2025

Molecular Imaging Branch, National Institute of Mental Health, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, 20892 United States.

Article Synopsis
  • Gene therapy and cell transduction are emerging as promising treatments for neurological and psychiatric disorders, with PET imaging playing a key role in assessing treatment effectiveness.
  • The success of PET imaging relies on the creation of specific radiotracers that can identify exogenous transgenes or modified cells in the brain, potentially eliminating the need for invasive procedures.
  • This article discusses the current state and challenges in developing PET probes for monitoring gene therapy and cellular interventions, highlighting the importance of radiochemical development and practical applications in a clinical setting.

Worth your sweat: wearable microfluidic flow rate sensors for meaningful sweat analytics.

Lab Chip

January 2025

Antwerp Engineering, Photoelectrochemistry and Sensing (A-PECS), University of Antwerp, Groenenborgerlaan 171, 2020 Antwerp, Belgium.

Wearable microfluidic sweat sensors could play a major role in the future of monitoring health and wellbeing. Sweat contains biomarkers to monitor health and hydration status, and it can provide information on drug intake, making it an interesting non-invasive alternative to blood. However, sweat is not created in excess, and this requires smart sweat collection strategies to handle small volumes.

SUMMARY (the "pneumococcus") is a significant human pathogen. The key determinant of pneumococcal fitness and virulence is its ability to produce a protective polysaccharide (PS) capsule, and anti-capsule antibodies mediate serotype-specific opsonophagocytic killing of bacteria. Notably, immunization with pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) has effectively reduced the burden of disease caused by serotypes included in vaccines but has also spurred a relative upsurge in the prevalence of non-vaccine serotypes.
