Dry plasma reduction (DPR) is an excellent approach for easily, continuously, uniformly and stably hybridizing platinum nanoparticles (Pt-NPs) on a graphene-coated layer under atmospheric pressure without any toxic chemicals and at a low temperature. The Pt-NPs with a size of 0.5-4 nm and mostly 2 nm were stably and uniformly hybridized on the surface of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) after co-reduction of Pt precursor ions and GO to Pt atoms and RGO, respectively. XPS analysis also revealed a repair of structural damage on the basal plane of the graphene as well as chemical bonding between Pt-NPs and RGO after DPR. Thus, the Pt-NPs/RGO nanohybrids applied to the counter electrode of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) exhibited robust stability as well as ultrahigh electrochemical catalytic activity and conductivity using less than 1% of the Pt exploited for the Pt-sputtered counter electrodes. Thus, the Pt-NPs/RGO nanohybrid fabricated by DPR could be an excellent material for a robust and low-cost counter electrode for DSCs.

Ampere-level reduction of pure nitrate by electron-deficient Ru with K ions repelling effect.

Nat Commun

Electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction offers a sustainable and efficient pathway for ammonia synthesis. Maintaining satisfactory Faradaic efficiency for long-term nitrate reduction under ampere-level current density remains challenging due to the inevitable hydrogen evolution, particularly in pure nitrate solutions. Herein, we present the application of electron deficiency of Ru metals to boost the repelling effect of counter K ions via the electric-field-dependent synergy of interfacial water and cations, and thus largely promote nitrate reduction reaction with a high yield and well-maintained Faradaic efficiency under ampere-level current density.

The present study demonstrates the synthesis of compact ZnO layers using CdS sensitized on ZnO as a photoanode with copper sulfide (CuS) and carbon as a counter electrode (CE). In this study, a compact ZnO layer was fabricated using the simple and low-cost successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method, and CuS CE films were synthesized using the chemical bath deposition method. Various characterizations, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), confirmed the formation of ZnO and CdS sensitizations on the ZnO .

Laser-Induced Graphene Electrodes for Flexible pH Sensors.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Applied Science and Technology, Politecnico di Torino, Corso Duca Degli Abruzzi 24, 10129 Turin, Italy.

In the growing field of personalized medicine, non-invasive wearable devices and sensors are valuable diagnostic tools for the real-time monitoring of physiological and biokinetic signals. Among all the possible multiple (bio)-entities, pH is important in defining health-related biological information, since its variations or alterations can be considered the cause or the effect of disease and disfunction within a biological system. In this work, an innovative (bio)-electrochemical flexible pH sensor was proposed by realizing three electrodes (working, reference, and counter) directly on a polyimide (Kapton) sheet through the implementation of CO laser writing, which locally converts the polymeric sheet into a laser-induced graphene material (LIG electrodes), preserving inherent mechanical flexibility of Kapton.

Electrified Nanogaps under an AC Field: A Molecular Dynamics Study.

The organization and dynamics of ions and water molecules at electrified solid-liquid interfaces are generally well understood under static fields, especially for macroscopic electrochemical systems. In contrast, studies involving alternating (AC) fields tend to be more challenging. In nanoscale systems, added complexity can arise from interfacial interactions and the need to consider ions and molecules explicitly.
