Nuclear polarization corrections to the μ4He+ Lamb shift.

Published: October 2013

Stimulated by the proton radius conundrum, measurements of the Lamb shift in various light muonic atoms are planned at PSI. The aim is to extract the rms charge radius with high precision, limited by the uncertainty in the nuclear polarization corrections. We present an ab initio calculation of the nuclear polarization for μ(4)He(+) leading to an energy correction in the 2S-2P transitions of δ(pol)(A)=-2.47 meV ±6%. We use two different state-of-the-art nuclear Hamiltonians and utilize the Lorentz integral transform with hyperspherical harmonics expansion as few-body methods. We take into account the leading multipole contributions, plus Coulomb, relativistic, and finite-nucleon-size corrections. Our main source of uncertainty is the nuclear Hamiltonian, which currently limits the attainable accuracy. Our predictions considerably reduce the uncertainty with respect to previous estimates and should be instrumental to the μ(4)He(+) experiment planned for 2013.

Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is a severe and frequent septic complication, characterized by neuronal damage as key pathological features. The astrocyte-microglia crosstalk in the central nervous system (CNS) plays important roles in various neurological diseases. However, how astrocytes interact with microglia to regulate neuronal injury in SAE is poorly defined.

Atmospheric wind energization of ocean weather.

Nat Commun

Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Rochester, Rochester, NY, USA.

Ocean weather comprises vortical and straining mesoscale motions, which play fundamentally different roles in the ocean circulation and climate system. Vorticity determines the movement of major ocean currents and gyres. Strain contributes to frontogenesis and the deformation of water masses, driving much of the mixing and vertical transport in the upper ocean.

Androgens, such as 5α-dihydrotestosterone (5α-DHT), regulate numerous functions by binding to nuclear androgen receptors (ARs) and potential unknown membrane receptors. Here, we report that the androgen 5α-DHT activates membrane receptor GPR133 in muscle cells, thereby increasing intracellular cyclic AMP (cAMP) levels and enhancing muscle strength. Further cryoelectron microscopy (cryo-EM) structural analysis of GPR133-Gs in complex with 5α-DHT or its derivative methenolone (MET) reveals the structural basis for androgen recognition.

The corrugated <110> oriented layered metal halide perovskites (MHP) are gaining increased attention for a variety of properties including intrinsic white light emission. One prototypical candidate is 1-(3-aminopropyl)imidazole lead bromide, which was reported to crystallize as the <110> oriented perovskite (API)PbBr [API = 1-(3-aminopropyl)imidazole]. This work shows that under similar reaction conditions, the same components can instead form (API)PbBr, which has a "perovskitoid" structure.
