Human cognition is traditionally studied in experimental conditions wherein confounding complexities of the natural environment are intentionally eliminated. Thus, it remains unknown how a brain region involved in a particular experimental condition is engaged in natural conditions. Here we use electrocorticography to address this uncertainty in three participants implanted with intracranial electrodes and identify activations of neuronal populations within the intraparietal sulcus region during an experimental arithmetic condition. In a subsequent analysis, we report that the same intraparietal sulcus neural populations are activated when participants, engaged in social conversations, refer to objects with numerical content. Our prototype approach provides a means for both exploring human brain dynamics as they unfold in complex social settings and reconstructing natural experiences from recorded brain signals.

Plants with the C photosynthetic pathway can withstand water stress better than plants with C metabolism. However, it is unclear whether C photosynthesis can be preliminarily activated in droughted cotton leaves, and if this contributes to increase in water use efficiency (WUE). An upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.

Background: The optimal management strategy for Stage IV rectal cancer with potentially treatable liver metastases remains controversial, particularly regarding the role of pelvic radiotherapy (RT).
Aims: We intend to investigate the impact of pelvic RT on oncological outcomes of rectal cancer with potentially treatable liver metastasis.
Methods And Results: This retrospective study included 83 patients diagnosed with rectal cancer and synchronous liver metastases from June 2012 to January 2022.

Introduction: The clinical characteristics of inflammatory bowel disease (dnIBD) diagnosed after solid organ transplant (SOT) are not well-described, particularly since the advent of biologic therapy for treatment of IBD.
Methods: We conducted a single-center, retrospective review of SOT recipients between 2010 and 2022 at the University of Minnesota Medical Center who were diagnosed with IBD after transplant.
Results: Of 89 patients at our center with IBD and a history of SOT, five (5.

Eggshell membrane (ESM) is a rich source of bioactive compounds, including proteins, peptides, and antioxidants, contributing to its potential therapeutic benefits. These natural antioxidants might help neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS) and modulate inflammatory responses, which are often linked with chondrocyte damage in osteoarthritis. In this study, we investigated the functional effects of ESM proteins on HO-induced oxidative stress in a neonatal canine chondrocytes.

Holocord syringomyelia (HSM) is characterized by a continuous spinal cord cavitation along its entire length and is currently poorly documented in dogs. This retrospective multicentric case series investigates the clinical and MRI findings in 18 dogs with HSM. The median age at presentation was 82 months (range 9-108 months) and French Bulldogs were overrepresented (50%).
