Distraction osteogenesis application in bone defect caused by osteomyelitis following mandibular fracture surgery: a case report and literature review.

BMC Musculoskelet Disord

October 2024

Guangxi Key Laboratory of Oral and Maxillofacial Rehabilitation and Reconstruction, Guangxi Clinical Research Center for Craniofacial Deformity, College&Hospital of Stomatology, Guangxi Medical University, Nanning, 530021, China.

Background: Osteomyelitis secondary to mandibular fracture surgery is rare and complete surgical debridement of necrotic infected tissues is an optimal treatment for it. Subsequent reconstruction is required for bone defect caused by operation. Autogenous, allograft and synthetic bone graft substitutes have become widespread in bone defect treatment.

Pattern of heterogeneity in normal brain ageing: screening for mild cognitive impairment and its risk of progression with a radiomics model.

Age Ageing

July 2024

Center for Rehabilitation Medicine, Department of Radiology, Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital (Affiliated People's Hospital), Hangzhou Medical College, Hangzhou 310014, Zhejiang, China.

Purpose: This study aimed to develop a normal brain ageing model based on magnetic resonance imaging and radiomics, therefore identifying radscore, an imaging indicator representing white matter heterogeneity and exploring the significance of radscore in detecting people's cognitive changes.

Methods: Three hundred sixty cognitively normal (CN) subjects from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) database and 105 CN subjects from the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative database were used to develop the model. In ADNI, 230 mild cognitive impairment (MCI) subjects were matched with 230 CN old-aged subjects to evaluate their heterogeneity difference.

Objectives: A considerable number of patients are diagnosed with prostate cancer (PCa) by transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). We aimed to evaluate whether radical prostatectomy (RP) brings survival benefits for these patients, especially in the elderly with advanced PCa.

Patients And Methods: We used the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database to obtain PCa cases diagnosed with TURP.

Article Synopsis
  • Lowering high blood pressure through antihypertensive drugs may reduce the risk of dementia in elderly patients, but the evidence's applicability to the general older population was previously unclear.
  • This study analyzed data from over 215,000 patients aged 65 and older in Lombardy, Italy, who started using antihypertensive medications between 2009 and 2012, assessing the link between drug exposure and dementia risk.
  • Results showed that higher exposure to these medications significantly correlates with lower dementia risk, with reductions of up to 24% in patients with high exposure, including very old and frail individuals.
