Background: In Parkinson's disease (PD) dyskinesias appear after long-term dopaminergic treatment. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) or the globus pallidus internus (GPi) is a well-established treatment option for both PD symptoms and complications of medication.

Objective: To elucidate physiological mechanisms of the effect of DBS on levodopa-induced dyskinesias (LID) we investigated both DBS in the GPi and the centromedian-parafascicular complex (CM-Pf), which are part of an internal basal ganglia loop connecting with the dorsolateral striatum. In particular, we focused on changes of oscillatory activity in the dorsolateral striatum, which also presents the entrance region of the basal ganglia (BG).

Methods: 6-Hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) hemiparkinsonian (HP) rats and 6-OHDA lesioned HP rats with LID (HP-LID) were used to compare the effect of DBS in the entopeduncular nucleus (EPN, the equivalent to the human GPi) and the thalamic parafascicular nucleus (Pf, the equivalent of the human CM-Pf) on dyskinesias and neuronal oscillatory activity of selected frequency bands in the dorsolateral striatum on and off levodopa.

Results: In HP-LID rats the relative beta and gamma power was lower, while relative theta power was higher as compared to HP rats. Chronic DBS of either the EPN or the Pf improved dyskinesia scores in HP-LID rats, and no differences in oscillatory activity were observed between groups.

Conclusions: Stimulation of the Pf has a specific impact on dyskinesias, which is similar to that found after EPN stimulation, and which is accompanied by changes of oscillatory activity.

Event-related potentials (ERPs) can reveal brain activity elicited by external stimuli. Innovative methods to decode ERPs could enhance the accuracy of brain-computer interface (BCI) technology and promote the understanding of cognitive processes. This paper proposes a novel Multi-Scale Pyramid Squeeze Attention Similarity Optimization Classification Neural Network (MS-PSA-SOC) for ERP Detection.

Basal forebrain innervation of the amygdala: an anatomical and computational exploration.

Theta oscillations of the mammalian amygdala are associated with processing, encoding and retrieval of aversive memories. In the hippocampus, the power of the network theta oscillation is modulated by basal forebrain (BF) GABAergic projections. Here, we combine anatomical and computational approaches to investigate if similar BF projections to the amygdaloid complex provide an analogous modulation of local network activity.

Unlabelled: Early skill learning develops in the context of activity changes in distributed cortico-subcortical regions. Here, we investigated network hubs-centers of information integration and transmission-within the brain network supporting early skill learning. We recorded magnetoencephalographic (MEG) brain activity in healthy human subjects who learned a moderately difficult sequence skill with their non-dominant left hand.

Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) presents significant challenges in neonatal management, particularly in the context of anesthesia. This case report details the successful anesthetic management of a five-day-old neonate with left-sided CDH requiring thoracoscopic repair. A five-day-old neonate, delivered via emergency cesarean section due to breech presentation, presented with severe respiratory distress and was diagnosed with left-sided CDH.

In vitro studies have shown that a neuron's electroresponsive properties can predispose it to oscillate at specific frequencies. In contrast, network activity in vivo can entrain neurons to rhythms that their biophysical properties do not predispose them to favor. However, there is limited information on the comparative frequency profile of unit entrainment across brain regions.
