A series of platinum(II) terpyridine complexes with L-valine-modified alkynyl ligands has been synthesized. A complex with an unsubstituted terpyridine and one valine unit on the alkynyl is shown to be capable of gel formation, which is in sharp contrast to the gelation properties of the corresponding organic counterparts. Upon sol-gel transition, a drastic color change from yellow to red is observed, which is indicative of the involvement of Pt⋅⋅⋅Pt interactions. Through the concentration- and temperature-dependent UV/Vis absorption, emission, circular dichroism, and (1) H NMR studies, the contribution of hydrogen bonding, Pt⋅⋅⋅Pt and π-π stacking interactions as driving forces for gelation have been established, and the importance of maintaining a delicate balance between different intermolecular forces has also been illustrated.

Self-assembly of platinum(II) complex foldamers is an essential approach to fabricate advanced luminescent materials. However, a comprehensive understanding of folding kinetics and their absorption spectra remains elusive. By constructing Markov state models (MSMs) from large-scale molecular dynamics simulations, we reveal that two largely similar dinuclear alknylplatinum(II) terpyridine foldamers, Pt-PEG and Pt-PE with slightly different bridges, exhibit distinctive folding kinetics.

A series of cyclometalated (N^C^N) Pt(II)-platinum complexes featuring a terpyridine ligand with a non-coordinating nitrogen atom and a Pt-C bond was synthesized. In the presence of Ag, the bis(isonitrile)Pt(II) complex formed a remarkable self-assembled helicoidal dimer stabilized by coordination of Ag(I) and metallophilic Pt-Ag interactions. Its assembly was observed in the solid state and maintained in solution.

Near-infrared phosphorescent materials have received significant attention due to their potential applications in bioimaging and diagnostics. Although, many types of organic phosphors with near-infrared emission have been developed, the low phosphorescence efficiency in aqueous solution hampers their practical applications in biological systems. Hence, there is an urgent need to develop near-infrared phosphorescent materials with high emission efficiency in aqueous media.

A series of mono- and heteronuclear platinum(II) and zinc(II) complexes with 4,4',4″-tri--butyl-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine ligand were synthesized and characterized. The DNA and protein binding properties of [ZnCl(terpy)] (), [{-PtCl(NH)(-pyrazine)ZnCl(terpy)}](ClO) (), [{-PtCl(NH)(-pyrazine)ZnCl(terpy)}](ClO) (), [{-PtCl(NH)(-4,4'-bipyridyl)ZnCl(terpy)}](CIO) () and [{-PtCl(NH)(-4,4'-bipyridyl)ZnCl(terpy)}](CIO) () (where terpy = 4,4',4″-tri--butyl-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine), were investigated by electronic absorption, fluorescence spectroscopic, and molecular docking methods. Complexes featuring transplatin exhibited lower and constant values compared to cisplatin analogs.
