Published: December 2013

Background: Photography standardization is paramount for appropriate critical analysis of aesthetic surgery outcomes. Therefore, the authors designed a study to evaluate the influence of different variables in photos of patients with indications for undergoing facial rejuvenation.

Methods: This blinded prospective study was conducted by the Section of Plastic Surgery in the Hospital das Clínicas at the Federal University of Paraná. In the study, 29 patients had their photos taken in two separate settings. Photo 1, termed "preoperative" (Pre), was obtained according to the same pattern for all patients. Photo 2, termed "postoperative" (Post), was acquired on the same day using different variables to manipulate the photo outcome. No surgery was actually performed. Both photos (Pre and Post) were sent to five experienced Brazilian plastic surgeons, who provided a score for photo 2 that varied from -10 to +10 compared with photo 1.

Results: The photos were examined by 119 plastic surgeons. No significant improvement was observed in most of the groups, except for the group that used a flash for the Post photography (p = 0.035). Almost half of the scores (45.37 %) were above zero. The highest score was found to be ten for two photographs of the makeup group. A score of zero was assigned to 54.62 % of the photos, which means no changes occurred between the Pre and Post photos.

Conclusion: Inadequate photographic technique can change assessments of photos in a meaningful way. All the factors evaluated had a positive impact, but the only statistically significant variable was the use of a flash in the Post group.

Level Of Evidence Ii: This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article. For a full description of these Evidence-Based Medicine ratings, please refer to the Table of Contents or the online Instructions to Authors www.springer.com/00266 .

January 2025

School of Automation Science and Engineering, South China University of Technology, China. Electronic address:

Talking face generation is a promising approach within various domains, such as digital assistants, video editing, and virtual video conferences. Previous works with audio-driven talking faces focused primarily on the synchronization between audio and video. However, existing methods still have certain limitations in synthesizing photo-realistic video with high identity preservation, audiovisual synchronization, and facial details like blink movements.

Ce6-GFFY is a novel photosensitizer for colorectal cancer therapy.

Article Synopsis
  • Photodynamic therapy, an established cancer treatment, is facing a challenge due to the lack of effective photosensitizers for colorectal cancer.
  • Researchers developed a new photosensitizer called Ce6-GFFY, which self-assembles and demonstrates good tumor targeting in mice.
  • Ce6-GFFY works by generating reactive oxygen species when exposed to a specific laser, enhancing the immune response against tumors and significantly inhibiting both primary and metastatic tumor growth after a single treatment.

Single GAF Domain Phytochrome Exhibits a pH-Dependent Shunt on the Millisecond Timescale.

The light-sensing activity of phytochromes is based on the reversible light-induced switching between two isomerization states of the bilin chromophore. These photo-transformations may not necessarily be only unidirectional, but could potentially branch back to the initial ground state in a thermally driven process termed shunt. Such shunts have been rarely reported, and thus our understanding of this process and its governing factors are limited.

Optical control of sphingolipid biosynthesis using photoswitchable sphingosines.

December 2024

Molecular Cell Biology Division, Department of Biology/Chemistry, Osnabrück University, Osnabrück, Germany; Center for Cellular Nanoanalytics, Osnabrück University, Osnabrück, Germany. Electronic address:

Sphingolipid metabolism comprises a complex interconnected web of enzymes, metabolites, and modes of regulation that influence a wide range of cellular and physiological processes. Deciphering the biological relevance of this network is challenging as numerous intermediates of sphingolipid metabolism are short-lived molecules with often opposing biological activities. Here, we introduce clickable, azobenzene-containing sphingosines, termed caSphs, as light-sensitive substrates for sphingolipid biosynthesis.

Article Synopsis
  • Frontal view morphing using chiaroscuro techniques enhances pre-operative consultations in rhinoplasty, helping surgeons explain potential outcomes by accurately representing light and shadow on nasal structures.
  • In a study involving 126 patients, the morphing process included photo analysis during consultations, leading to higher patient satisfaction post-surgery compared to pre-operative simulations.
  • The chiaroscuro concept is crucial in creating realistic surgical plans and serves as an effective educational tool for young surgeons during preoperative consultations.
