Experiments and simulations both suggest that the pressure experienced by an adsorbed phase confined within a carbon nanoporous material can be several orders of magnitude larger than the bulk phase pressure in equilibrium with the system. To investigate this pressure enhancement, we report a molecular-simulation study of the pressure tensor of argon confined in slit-shaped nanopores with walls of various models, including carbon and silica materials. We show that the pressure is strongly enhanced by confinement, arising from the effect of strongly attractive wall forces; confinement within purely repulsive walls does not lead to such enhanced pressures. Simulations with both the Lennard-Jones and Barker-Fisher-Watts intermolecular potentials for argon-argon interactions give rise to similar results. We also show that an increase in the wall roughness significantly decreases the in-pore pressure due to its influence on the structure of the adsorbate. Finally, we demonstrate that the pressures calculated from the mechanical (direct pressure tensor calculations) and the thermodynamic (volume perturbation method) routes yield almost identical results, suggesting that both methods can be used to calculate the local pressure tensor components in the case of these planar geometries.

Objectives: To investigate glymphatic function in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) using the diffusion tensor image analysis along the perivascular space (DTI-ALPS) method and to explore the associations of ALPS index with ventriculomegaly and white matter hyperintensities (WMH).

Materials And Methods: This study included 41 patients with iNPH and 40 age- and sex-matched normal controls (NCs). All participants underwent brain MRI.

We applied an MRI technique diffusion tensor imaging along the perivascular space (DTI-ALPS) for assessing glymphatic system (GS) in a genome-wide association study (GWAS) and phenome-wide association study (PheWAS) of 40,486 European individuals. Exploratory analysis revealed 17 genetic loci significantly associating with the regional DTI-ALPS index. We found 58 genes, including and , which prioritized in the DTI-ALPS index subtypes and associated with neurodegenerative diseases.

Background: The goal of this study was to examine the effects of spinal cord stimulation (SCS) on muscle activity during walking after lower-limb amputation. Amputation results in a loss of sensory feedback and alterations in gait biomechanics, including co-contractions of antagonist muscles about the knee and ankle, and reduced pelvic obliquity range-of-motion and pelvic drop. SCS can restore sensation in the missing limb, but its effects on muscle activation and gait biomechanics have not been studied in people with lower-limb amputation.

Effects of the Quantum Vacuum at a Cosmic Scale and of Dark Energy.

Entropy (Basel)

November 2024

Departamento de Física, Universidad de Cantabria, 39005 Santander, Spain.

The Einstein equation in a semiclassical approximation is applied to a spherical region of the universe, with the stress-energy tensor consisting of the mass density and pressure of the ΛCDM cosmological model plus an additional contribution due to the quantum vacuum. Expanding the equation in powers of Newton constant G, the vacuum contributes to second order. The result is that at least a part of the acceleration in the expansion of the universe may be due to the quantum vacuum fluctuations.

Thalamo-insular cortex connections in the rat and human.

Neurosci Lett

January 2025

Department of Anatomy, Koç University, School of Medicine, Istanbul, Turkey. Electronic address:

The insular cortex (ICx) has a role in large a variety of functions. Thalamus plays an important role in modulating cortical functions. The present study aims to show thalamic-ICx connections using the fluoro-gold (FG) tracing method in rats and diffusion tensoring-based tractography (DTI) in humans.
