A change in the elasticity and the resistance to dissolution of the mouse zona pellucida (ZP) was quantitatively evaluated at immature germinal vesicle (GV), mature metaphase II (MII) and fertilized pronuclear (PN) stages. Young's modulus of the ZP was measured using a micro tactile sensor (MTS), a highly sensitive resonator-based sensor for a micro scale elasticity measurement. 0.25% α-chymotrypsin was used for the ZP dissolution assay. The results of measuring the ZP elasticity and the dissolution time clearly showed that the ZP softened during oocyte maturation and the ZP hardened after fertilization. The results indicate that the amount of the zona softening can be a criterion to evaluate oocyte quality for the selection of top quality mature oocyte before in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment.

In mammals, blastocyst-stage trophectoderm (TE) contacts the maternal body at the time of implantation and forms the placenta after implantation, which supports the development of the fetus. Studying gene function in TE and placenta is important to understand normal implantation and pregnancy processes and their dysfunction. However, genetically modified mice are commonly generated by manipulating pronuclear-stage zygotes, which modify both the genome of the fetus and the placenta.

Herpes zoster is an acute infectious skin disease caused by the reactivation of latent varicella-zoster virus, vaccination, such as subunit vaccine with good safety, can effectively prevent shingles through increasing immunity of the body. However, protein antigens are prone to degradation and inactivation, which alone is generally not sufficient to induce potent immune effect. In this study, the liposomal vaccine platform modified with mPLA (TLR4 agonist) was developed to improve the immunogenicity of glycoprotein E (VZV-gE) derived from herpes zoster virus.

Acute enteritis, an intestinal disease with intestinal inflammation and injury as the main pathological manifestations. Inhibiting the inflammatory response is critical to the treatment of acute enteritis. Previous studies have shown that the Hippophae rhamnoides polysaccharide (HRP) has strong immune-enhancing effects.

Obesity, influenced by environmental pollutants, can lead to complex metabolic disruptions. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the molecular mechanisms underlying metabolically abnormal obesity caused by exposure to a high-fat diet (HFD) and fine particulate matter (PM). Following the PRISMA guidelines, articles from 2019 to 2024 were gathered from Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed, and a random-effects meta-analysis was performed, along with subgroup analyses and pathway enrichment analyses.

Four genes-DAND5, PKD1L1, MMP21, and CIROP-form a genetic module that has specifically evolved in vertebrate species that harbor motile cilia in their left-right organizer (LRO). We find here that CIROZ (previously known as C1orf127) is also specifically expressed in the LRO of mice, frogs, and fish, where it encodes a protein with a signal peptide followed by 3 zona pellucida N domains, consistent with extracellular localization. We report 16 individuals from 10 families with bi-allelic CIROZ inactivation variants, which cause heterotaxy with congenital heart defects.
