Terrestrial plants re-emit around 1-2% of the carbon they fix as isoprene and monoterpenes. These emissions have major roles in the ecological relationships among living organisms and in atmospheric chemistry and climate, and yet their actual quantification at the ecosystem level in different regions is far from being resolved with available models and field measurements. Here we provide evidence that a simple remote sensing index, the photochemical reflectance index, which is indicative of light use efficiency, is a good indirect estimator of foliar isoprenoid emissions and can therefore be used to sense them remotely. These results open new perspectives for the potential use of remote sensing techniques to track isoprenoid emissions from vegetation at larger scales. On the other hand, our study shows the potential of this photochemical reflectance index technique to validate the availability of photosynthetic reducing power as a factor involved in isoprenoid production.

ConspectusPhotochemical reactions have always been the source of a great deal of mystery. While classified as a type of chemical reaction, no doubts are allowed that the general tenets of ground-state chemistry do not directly apply to photochemical reactions. For a typical chemical reaction, understanding the critical points of the ground-state potential (free) energy surface and embedding them in a thermodynamics framework is often enough to infer reaction yields or characteristic time scales.

In this study, we analyzed purine derivatives using multimatrix variation matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI MS) with α-cyano-4-hydroxycinnamic acid (CHCA), 1,5-diaminonaphtalene (DAN), 5-formylsalicylic acid (FSA), and 5-nitrosalicylic acid (NSA) as matrices. Further, we focused on the abstraction/attachment of hydrogen from/to analytes and detected [M - H], [M + 2H] and/or [M + 3H] in MALDI MS spectra of compounds containing nitrogen and/or carbonyl oxygen. Although [M - H] generation of purine compounds in MALDI MS with conventional matrices was challenging, NSA-MALDI MS effectively yielded the [M - H]species of purine derivatives compared with CHCA, FSA, and DAN, and the [M - H]/[M + H] ratios reflected their structures, such as the substituting groups and positions.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) present in surface aquatic systems is a heterogeneous mixture of organic compounds reflecting its allochthonous and autochthonous organic matter (OM) sources. The composition of DOM is determined by environmental factors like land use, water chemistry, and climate, which influence its release, movement, and turnover in the ecosystem. However, studying the impact of these environmental factors on DOM composition is challenging due to the dynamic nature of the system and the complex interactions of multiple environmental factors involved.

Atmospheric oxidation capacity (AOC) reflects the potential of the atmosphere in converting primary pollutants into secondary aerosols and ozone (O). In this study, the AOC at an urban supersite in Wuhan, a megacity in central China, was quantified by considering the reactions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and carbon monoxide (CO) with atmospheric oxidants (OH, NO, O, and Cl). Photochemical loss of total VOCs (13.

One of the biggest challenges in food packaging is the creation of sustainable and eco-friendly packaging materials to shield foods from ultraviolet (UV) photochemical damage and to preserve the distinctive physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of foods throughout the supply chain. Accordingly, this study focuses on enhancing the UV shielding properties and biological activity of carboxylmethyl cellulose sodium (CMC) through modifications using zinc oxide (ZnO), copper oxide (CuO), and graphene oxide (GO) using the solution casting technique. The hybrid nanocomposites were characterized by fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrophotometer, ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometer, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and x-ray diffraction (XRD).
