A solitary monolithic integrated semiconductor laser (MISL) chip with a size of 780 micrometer is designed and fabricated for broadband chaos generation. Such a MISL chip consists of a DFB section, a phase section and an amplification section. Test results indicate that under suitable operation conditions, this laser chip can be driven into broadband chaos. The generated chaos covers an RF frequency range, limited by our measurement device, of 26.5GHz, and possesses significant dimension and complexity. Moreover, the routes into and out of chaos are also characterized through extracting variety dynamical states of temporal waveforms, phase portraits, RF spectra and statistical indicators.

Parallel generation of multi-channel chaos is critical to applications, and the key challenge is the simultaneous generation of broadband chaos with multiple channels and low correlation. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a parallel broadband chaos generation scheme using a single long-active-cavity Fabry-Perot (LC-FP) semiconductor laser under optical feedback. The active-cavity length is designed to be 1500 μm, so the power spectrum of chaos is expanded and flattened by the mode-beating effect.

This study analyzes entropy of broadband chaos excited in a semiconductor laser subject to intensity-modulated optical injection for random number generation with guaranteed unpredictability. It is identified that the flattening of spectral profile around the laser relaxation resonance blurs the periodicity it brings, and thus leads to a high entropy value and a high random number generation rate. The effect of measurement device noise on entropy suggests that both the power of chaos needs to be kept at a level to achieve an adequate signal-to-noise ratio, 24 dB or more, and the entropy contribution of the measurement device noise is excluded in order to assert entropy that can be extracted solely from the intrinsic property of chaos.

An approach to generating periodic spiking pulses in a broadband opto-electronic oscillator (OEO) without external injection is proposed and demonstrated. Through biasing the electro-optic Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) in the OEO cavity at its nonlinear working point, spiking pulses are excited by the self-generated chaos under the combined action of the loop filter response time and the nonlinear excitation effect. An interaction force is introduced between pulses.

In this paper, we propose a novel and simple multi-channel broadband optical chaos generation scheme based on phase modulation and chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG). Firstly, phase modulation is introduced to generate more new frequency components to broaden the spectrum of the phase chaos. Meanwhile, the accumulated dispersion from CFBG distorts the intensity chaos, converts phase chaos to intensity chaos, and weakens the laser relaxation oscillation.

This work reports the nonlinear dynamics of a mid-infrared interband cascade laser (ICL) subject to optical injection. It is shown that the stable locking regime is asymmetric and broadens with increasing injection strength. Outside the locking regime, the ICL mostly produces period-one oscillations.
