We prospectively assessed the value of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) by the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) and Cockcroft-Gault (C-G) equations in predicting inhospital adverse outcomes after primary coronary intervention for acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction. We classified 647 patients into 3 categories according to eGFR, <60, 60 to 90, and >90 mL/min/1.73 m(2). The eGFRC-G classified 17 patients in the >90 mL/min/1.73 m(2) subgroup and 6 and 11 patients in the 60 to 90 and <60 mL/min/1.73 m(2) subgroups, respectively. In multivariate analysis, patients with eGFRC-G < 60 mL/min/1.73 m(2) had 19.5-fold (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.55-178) higher mortality risk and 5.48-fold (95% CI 1.75-24.21) higher major adverse cardiac events risk compared to patients with eGFRC-G >90 mL/min/1.73 m(2) (P = .01 and P = .01, respectively); the eGFRMDRD was not predictive. Although the MDRD equation more accurately estimates GFR in certain populations, the CG formula may be a better predictor of adverse events.

Exposure to toxins causes lasting damaging effects on the body. Numerous studies in humans and animals suggest that diet has the potential to modify the epigenome and these modifications can be inherited transgenerationally, but few studies investigate how diet can protect against negative effects of toxins. Potential evidence in the primary literature supports that caloric restriction, high-fat diets, high protein-to-carbohydrate ratios, and dietary supplementation protect against environmental toxins and strengthen these effects on their offspring's epigenome.

Recent studies support the influence of paternal lifestyle and diet before conception on the health of the offspring via epigenetic inheritance through sperm DNA methylation, histone modification, and small non-coding RNA (sncRNA) expression and regulation. Smoking may induce DNA hypermethylation in genes related to anti-oxidation and insulin resistance. Paternal diet and obesity are associated with greater risks of metabolic dysfunction in offspring via epigenetic alterations in the sperm.

Introduction: This systematic review examines dietary interventions in the military nutrition environment (MNE) to support the health and performance of service members (SM).
Methods: Articles that implemented a dietary intervention for active duty SMs on military installations were included in this analysis (from 2010 to 2013). Of the 723 articles yielded in screening through Covidence, 6 studies qualified to be included in this review.

Background: Modifiable lifestyle behaviors significantly influence the risk of cognitive impairment. However, the cumulative effects of multidimensional lifestyle profiles on cognitive function remain poorly understood, as most studies examine individual lifestyle behaviors in isolation. This study aimed to identify distinct profiles of individuals based on healthy lifestyle behaviors and to examine associations between these profiles and cognitive function in older Chinese adults.
