For nearly a century, biologists have emphasized the profound importance of spatial scale for ecology, evolution and conservation. Nonetheless, objectively identifying critical scales has proven incredibly challenging. Here we extend new techniques from physics and social sciences that estimate modularity on networks to identify critical scales for movement and gene flow in animals. Using four species that vary widely in dispersal ability and include both mark-recapture and population genetic data, we identify significant modularity in three species, two of which cannot be explained by geographic distance alone. Importantly, the inclusion of modularity in connectivity and population viability assessments alters conclusions regarding patch importance to connectivity and suggests higher metapopulation viability than when ignoring this hidden spatial scale. We argue that network modularity reveals critical meso-scales that are probably common in populations, providing a powerful means of identifying fundamental scales for biology and for conservation strategies aimed at recovering imperilled species.

Background: The emergence of new molecular targeted drugs marks a breakthrough in asthma treatment, particularly for severe cases. Yet, options for moderate-to-severe asthma treatment remain limited, highlighting the urgent need for novel therapeutic drug targets. In this study, we aimed to identify new treatment targets for asthma using the Mendelian randomization method and large-scale genome-wide association data (GWAS).

Background: Case-Based Learning (CBL) and Problem-Based Learning (PBL) are popular methods in medical education. However, we do not fully understand how they affect the clinical thinking skills of Assistant General Practitioner (AGP) trainees. This randomised controlled trial aimed to assess the effectiveness of combining CBL and PBL and compare their impact on the clinical thinking skills of AGP trainees with that of traditional lecture-based learning (LBL).

Objective: The aim of this study was to comprehensively investigate the clinical efficacy of intraoperative local joint injection and intramuscular injection of betamethasone in patients with severe traumatic knee osteoarthritis (KOA).
Methods: 80 patients with severe traumatic KOA undergoing total knee arthroplasty were retrospectively recruited and rolled into S1 group (intra-articular injection of ropivacaine + betamethasone and isotonic saline mixture at joint incision), S2 group (muscle local injection of betamethasone before incision closure, simultaneously intra-articular injection of ropivacaine + isotonic saline mixture at joint incision), and D group (intra-articular injection of ropivacaine + isotonic saline mixture at the joint incision). Visual analog scale (VAS) score, serum inflammatory factors (IFs), hospital for special surgery (HSS)score, Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), and adverse reaction events (AREs) were analyzed.

Identification of critical material attributes(CMAs) is a key issue in the quality control of large-scale TCM products like Jianwei Xiaoshi Tablets. This study focuses on the granules of Jianwei Xiaoshi Tablets, using tablet tensile strength as the primary quality attribute. A method for identifying the CMAs and a design space for the granules were established, along with a predictive model for the granule CMAs based on Fourier transform near-infrared spectroscopy(FT-NIR).
