Upon 980 nm diode laser excitation visible upconversion emission from the Tb(3+) ions has been observed in combustion synthesized Tb(3+)-Yb(3+) codoped Y2O3 phosphor. The intensity of upconversion as well as downconversion emission bands has been increased by codoping of Li(+) ions into Tb(3+)-Yb(3+):Y2O3 phosphor and the reason behind this increment is discussed. The pump power dependence of upconversion emission bands has shown two-photon absorption process. The cooperative energy transfer from Yb(3+) to Tb(3+) ions is supposed to be responsible for the upconversion emission from the Tb(3+) ions on near infrared excitation. The calculated colour coordinates indicate the purity of intense green emission from present phosphor which is suitable for various photonic applications.

Introduction: The successful diagnosis and treatment of early-stage breast cancer enhances the quality of life of patients. As a promising alternative to recently developed magnetic resonance imaging-guided radiotherapy, we proposed fluorescence molecular imaging-guided photodynamic therapy (FMI-guided PDT), which requires no expensive equipment. In the FMI simulations, ICG-C11 which has emission peaks at near-infrared wavelengths was used as the FMI agent.

Controllable Nano-Crystallization in Fluoroborosilicate Glass Ceramics for Broadband Visible Photoluminescence.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

Sino-French Hoffmann Institute, School of Basic Medical Science, Guangzhou Medical University, Guangzhou 511436, China.

A transparent fluoroborosilicate glass ceramic was designed for the controllable precipitation of fluoride nanocrystals and to greatly enhance the photoluminescence of active ions. Through the introduction of BO into fluorosilicate glass, the melting temperature was decreased from 1400 to 1050 °C, and the abnormal crystallization in the fabrication process of fluorosilicate glass was avoided. More importantly, the controlled crystallizations of KZnF and KYbF in fluoroborosilicate glass ceramics enhanced the emission of Mn and Mn-Yb dimers by 6.

Photofunctional cyclophane host-guest systems.

Chem Commun (Camb)

Institut für Organische Chemie, Universität Würzburg, Am Hubland, 97074 Würzburg, Germany.

Modulation of optical properties through smart protein matrices is exemplified by a few examples in nature such as rhodopsin (absorption wavelength tuning) and the green fluorescence protein (emission), but in general, the scope found in nature for the matrix-controlled photofunctions remains rather limited. In this review, we present cyclophane-based supramolecular host-guest complexes for which electronic interactions between the cyclophane host and mostly planar aromatic guest molecules can actively modulate excited-state properties in a more advanced way involving both singlet and triplet excited states. We begin by highlighting photofunctional host-guest systems for on-off fluorescence switching and chiroptical functions using bay-functionalized perylene bisimide cyclophanes.

Artificial Fine-Tuned van Hove Singularity in Twisted Bilayer and Double-Twist Trilayer Graphene with Enhanced Absorption for Photodetection and Photoemission in the Near-Infrared II Range.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

Optical responses of twisted bilayer graphene at targeted wavelengths can be amplified by leveraging energy levels of van Hove singularities (VHS) via tuning periods of moiré superlattices. Therefore, precise control of twist angles as well as the moiré superlattices is necessary for fabricating integrated optoelectronic devices such as photodetectors and emitters. Although recent advances in twist angle control help the observation of correlated states in twisted magic-angle graphene structures, the impact of such precise control on enhanced optical absorption is still under investigation.
