Purpose: To investigate sensitivity of contributing factors to heterogeneity corrections in ocular brachytherapy using iodine-125 (I) Collaborative Ocular Melanoma Study (COMS) plaques.

Material And Methods: Using egs_brachy, Monte Carlo (MC) simulations were performed for I COMS plaques (model: IsoAid IAI-125A). Homogeneous dose (D) was estimated under the American Association of Physicists in Medicine Task Group-43 assumptions, with 85 Gy prescribed to a 5 mm depth.

Purpose: This paper outlines the commissioning of the Varian (VMS, Varian Medical Systems, Palo Alto, CA) Universal Interstitial Cylinder (UIC) applicator set for Ir-192 HDR brachytherapy. The UIC was commissioned for use with CT and MRI and a custom phantom was designed to avoid the introduction of water-like materials into the needle guide tracks. Various marker strands were investigated to determine which allowed the most accurate reconstruction of source positions.

Purpose: To compare the cost-effectiveness of a nurse-led sexual rehabilitation intervention with standard care in women treated with external beam radiotherapy, with or without brachytherapy, for gynaecological cancers.

Methods: Eligible women were randomly assigned to the intervention (n = 112) or standard care (n = 117). Primary endpoint was sexual functioning at 12-months post-radiotherapy, assessed by the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI).

Clinical Features and Initial Management Outcomes of Uveal Melanomas in a Single Tertiary Center in Egypt.

Ocul Oncol Pathol

December 2024

Cairo University Ocular Oncology Service, Department of Ophthalmology, Kasr Al-Ainy School of Medicine, Cairo University, Cairo, Egypt.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the demographic, clinical, and management outcomes of patients with uveal melanoma at a tertiary center in Egypt over five years.
  • A total of 93 patients were treated, with most tumors being choroidal, and common treatments included brachytherapy and gamma knife radiosurgery, leading to a successful globe salvage rate of 84.62%.
  • The conclusion emphasizes the importance of timely referrals and proper assessments to improve treatment success and highlights the need for advanced tumor patients to consider enucleation to lower the risk of metastasis and mortality.

A novel 3D printing method for a notched eye plaque "dummy" for uveal melanoma brachytherapy.

Brachytherapy

November 2024

Department of Radiation Oncology, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia, PA; Ocular Oncology Service, Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia, PA.

Purpose: Suture preplacement by the ocular oncology surgeon is a critical step before inserting a radioactive plaque for ocular melanoma brachytherapy. We report on a novel 3D-printing method to create a custom "dummy" plaque applicator for the 22 mm notched gold plaque using in-house 3D-printing.

Methods: A computer-aided design (CAD) file was created replicating a heavily used gold plaque that no longer has a satisfactory "dummy" plaque.
