An in situ temperature-controlled field chamber was developed for studying a large population of rice plant under different nighttime temperature treatments while maintaining conditions similar to those in the field during daytime. The system consists of a pipe hoop shed-type chamber with manually removable covers manipulated to provide a natural environment at daytime and a relatively stable and accurate temperature at night. Average air temperatures of 22.4 ± 0.3°C at setting of 22°C, 27.6 ± 0.4°C at 27°C, and 23.8 ± 0.7°C ambient conditions were maintained with the system. No significant horizontal and vertical differences in temperature were found and only slight changes in water temperatures were observed between the chambers and ambient conditions at 36 days after transplanting. A slight variation in CO₂ concentration was observed at the end of the treatment during the day, but the 10-μmol CO₂ mol⁻¹ difference was too small to alter plant response. The present utilitarian system, which only utilizes an air conditioner/heater, is suitable for studying the effect of nighttime temperature on plant physiological responses with minimal perturbation of other environmental factors. At the same time, it will enable in situ screening of many rice genotypes.

Studies on triaxial contact stresses and asphalt pavement rutting are of great significance for traffic safety and the durability of the asphalt pavement. Our new approach considers more evaluating indicators by investigating compressive creep, vertical, and longitudinal permanent deformation to analyse asphalt pavement rutting under triaxial contact stress during typical driving conditions. For this purpose, firstly sophisticated three-dimensional finite element models encompassing the truck-bus tire and asphalt pavement temperature are developed.

Aims: To investigate the relationship between nocturia and values measured using a novel multifunctional portable urine-measuring device.
Methods: Thirty-five older men with nocturia and/or high-normal or high blood pressure were enrolled to record measurements on one full day (24 h) and two nights using the portable device during urination. Participants used a semi-conical cup with a small hole equipped with a conductivity sensor, temperature sensor, and timer to measure urine volume, salt content, urine temperature, and urination speed.

Population blooms of scyphozoan jellyfish in tropical shallow water regions can fuel localized fisheries but also negatively impact human welfare. However, there is a lack of baseline ecological data regarding the scyphozoans in the region, which could be used to manage a fast-growing fishery and mitigate potential impacts. Thus, this study aims to investigate the temporal factors driving the distribution of scyphozoan community along the environmental gradients under different monsoon seasons, rainfall periods, moon phases, and diel-tidal conditions in the Klang Strait located in the central region along the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, where bloom events are increasing.

Thermochromic smart windows effectively reduce the energy consumption for buildings through passive light modulation including the transmission of visible (T) and near-infrared (T) light, and the emissivity of mid-infrared (ε) light in response to ambient temperature change. However, thermochromic windows that maintain high T while modulating T and ε simultaneously are highly desirable but still challenging. Here, we develop a thermochromic smart window based on a two-way shape memory polymer to enable reversible transformation and achieve T modulation of 44.

The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei major mineral belt represents a significant economic development area in China. Effective monitoring and assessment of the regional landscape ecological risk can provide a scientific basis for an ecological protection strategy for the environmental protection of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei major mineral belt. In this study, a landscape ecological risk index was constructed based on land use/land cover, and the spatial and temporal variations of landscape ecological risk were subsequently analyzed.
