Whether environmental effects during juvenile development can alter the ontogeny of adult mating behaviour remains largely unexplored. We evaluated the effect of diet on the early expression of conspecific recognition in spadefoot toads, Spea bombifrons. We found that juvenile toads display phonotaxis behaviour six weeks post-metamorphosis. However, preference for conspecifics versus heterospecifics emerged later and was diet dependent. Thus, the environment can affect the early development of species recognition in a way that might alter adult behaviour. Evaluating such effects is important for understanding variation in hybridization between species and the nature of species boundaries.

Due to the similarity to human hepatocytes, porcine hepatocytes play an important role in hepatic research and drug evaluation. However, once hepatocytes were cultured in vitro, it was often prone to dedifferentiate, resulting in the loss of their characteristic features and normal functions, which impede their application in liver transplantation and hepatotoxic drugs evaluation. Up to now, this process has yet to be thoroughly investigated from the single-cell resolution and multi-omics perspective.

Ensuring species integrity and successful reproduction is pivotal for the survival of angiosperms. Members of Brassicaceae family employ a "lock and key" mechanism involving stigmatic (sRALFs) and pollen RALFs (pRALFs) binding to FERONIA, a Catharanthus roseus receptor-like kinase 1-like (CrRLK1L) receptor, to establish a prezygotic hybridization barrier. In the absence of compatible pRALFs, sRALFs bind to FERONIA, inducing a lock state for pollen tube penetration.

Iron overload has been shown to have deleterious effects in the brain through the formation of reactive oxygen species, which ultimately may contribute to neurodegenerative disorders. Accordingly, rodent studies have indicated that systemic administration of iron produces excess iron in the brain and results in behavioral and cognitive deficits. To what extent cognitive abilities are affected and which neurobiological mechanisms underlie those deficits remain to be more fully characterized.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play essential roles in both physiological and pathological processes. Under physiological conditions, appropriate amounts of ROS play an important role in signaling and regulation in cells. However, too much ROS can lead to many health problems, including inflammation, cancer, delayed wound healing, neurodegenerative diseases (such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease), and autoimmune diseases, and oxidative stress from excess ROS is also one of the most critical factors in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases such as atherosclerosis.

A self-powered dual-electrode aptasensor was developed for the detection of tumor marker carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). The composite BiVO/ZnInS, which is capable of forming a Z-scheme heterojunction, was chosen as the photoanode, and the AuNP/CuBiO complex was chosen as the photocathode in photoelectrochemical (PEC) detection. The experiments showed that the constructed self-powered dual-electrode system had a good photoelectric response to white light, and the photocurrent signal of the photocathode was significantly enhanced under the influence of the photoanode.
