Transradial access for peripheral and cerebrovascular interventions.

Published: October 2013

Objectives: In the present review, we report indications, equipment, techniques, results, and complications of transradial access (TRA) in peripheral as well as in cerebrovascular interventions.

Background: Percutaneous peripheral and cerebrovascular interventions are usually performed using transfemoral access; however, the risk of vascular complications with this approach is not negligible. Moreover, femoral access may be precluded by advanced vascular disease, and brachial access has been traditionally used as an alternative approach despite the risk of local complications. While TRA has gained wide acceptance for coronary procedures, little is known about its use for peripheral and cerebrovascular interventions. Thanks to dedicated equipment, most vascular territories may now also be treated by TRA.

Conclusions: TRA may become the alternative access of choice for peripheral and cerebrovascular interventions when femoral access is precluded. In addition, TRA may become the preferred access for the treatment of selected peripheral lesions.

Surgical Bailout in Patients Undergoing Transfemoral Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement: Incidence, Trends, and Clinical Outcomes.

JACC Cardiovasc Interv

January 2025

Department of Cardiology, Amsterdam University Medical Center, University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam Cardiovascular Sciences, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Electronic address:

Background: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) harbors the risk of periprocedural complications that require emergent cardiac surgery, or "surgical bailout." Surgical bailout intends to be lifesaving but is associated with high mortality. This has given rise to discussion on the necessity of surgical backup during TAVR.

Background: Antithrombotic therapy (AT) after left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) has the purpose of preventing device related thrombosis (DRT), avoiding embolic events; nevertheless, the correct antithrombotic regimen after LAAO is still under debate.

Aims: Aim of this substudy of the observational LOGIC registry was to describe the efficacy and safety of a light antithrombotic regimen, comprising single antiplatelet therapy or none, compared to a standard antithrombotic regimen, after a successful LAAO.

Methods: Patients with NVAF that underwent LAAO were previously included in the LOGIC registry.

Pre-eclampsia as a predictor of early-onset cardiovascular impairment among young women (PREECARDIA study): protocol for a prospective cohort study.

BMJ Open

December 2024

EPIunit and Laboratório para a Investigação Integrativa e Translacional em Saúde Populacional (ITR), Universidade do Porto Instituto de Saude Publica, Porto, Portugal.

Introduction: Pre-eclampsia is a pregnancy-related complication estimated to affect up to 8% of pregnancies worldwide. It is associated with an increased risk of postpartum sustained hypertension, coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, peripheral arterial disease and cardiovascular-related mortality. Nevertheless, these associations have seldom been addressed in younger women from sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).

Background: Identifying trends of hospital admissions and costs for cardiovascular disease events (CVDEs) is crucial for public health intervention and the economic burden for future clinical improvements and better outcomes. This study aims to define the admission trends and cost of CVDE among type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients in Malaysia between 2014 and 2020.  Methodology: An ecological study was conducted using hospital admission data taken from the Casemix database in public hospitals in Malaysia.

Objective: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a common condition that can lead to adverse macrovascular complications. This study aims to determine the prevalence of macrovascular complications in adults aged ≥ 50 with T2DM in Ardakan city, using data from the Ardakan Cohort Study on Aging (ACSA).

Methods: A cross-sectional investigation involved 5933 participants from the ACSA; of those assessed, 2340 had T2DM.
