Nanoscale surface modification of biomedical implant materials offers enhanced biological activity concerning protein adsorption and cell adherence. Nanoporous anodic alumina oxide (AAO) layers were prepared by electrochemical oxidation of thin Al-seed layers in 0.22 M C2H2O4, applying anodization voltages of 20-60 V. The AAO layers are characterized by a mean pore diameter varying from 15 to 40 nm, a mean pore distance of 40-130 nm, a total porosity of ≈ 10% and a thickness of 560 ± 40 nm. Zeta potential and isoelectric point (iep) were derived from streaming potential measurements and correlated to the topology variation of the nanoporous AAO layers. With decreasing pore diameter a shift of iep from ≈ 7.9 (pore diameter 40 nm) to ≈ 6.7 (pore diameter 15 nm) was observed. Plain alumina layers, however, possess an iep of ≈ 9. Compared to the plain alumina surface an enhanced adherence and activity of hFOB cells was observed on the nanoporous AAO after 24h culture with a maximum at a pore size of 40 nm. The topology-induced change of the electrochemical surface state may have a strong impact on protein adsorption as well as on cell adhesion, which offers a high potential for the development of bioactive AAO coatings on various biomaterial substrates.

Unlabelled: The complement cascade is a front-line defense against pathogens. Complement activation generates the membrane attack complex (MAC), a 10-11 nm diameter pore formed by complement proteins C5b through C8 and polymerized C9. The MAC embeds within the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria and displays bactericidal activity.

A wafer-scale process for fabricating monolithically suspended nano-perforated membranes (NPMs) with integrated support structures into silicon is developed. Existing fabrication methods are suitable for many desired geometries, but face challenges related to mechanical robustness and fabrication complexity. We demonstrate a process that utilizes the cyclic deposit, remove, etch, and multi-step (DREM) process for directional etching of high-aspect-ratio (HAR) 300 nm in diameter nano-pores of 700 nm pitch.

Pollution caused by antibiotics, bacteria, and organic dyes presents global public health challenges, posing serious risks to human health. Consequently, new, efficient, fast, and simple photocatalytic systems are urgently required. To this end, 2,7-di(pyridin-4-yl)benzo[lmn][3,8]phenanthroline-1,3,6,8(2H,7H)-tetraone (NDI)-an electron acceptor-is introduced as a connecting column into a porphyrin-based metal-organic layer (2DTcpp) with excellent photocatalytic activity; this modification yields a three-dimensional pillar-layered metal-organic framework (MOF, 3DNDITcpp) with superior photocatalytic reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation capability.

To enhance the water stability and bearing capacity of the Shandong Ming Dong Expressway's soaked subgrade, carbide slag (CS) and coal gangue powder (CG) were used as stabilisers. Stabiliser dosages of 5%, 10%, and 15%, with the CS:CG ratios of 0:100, 30:70, 50:50, 70:30, and 100:0, were tested. The study evaluated the performance of CS-CG stabilised soil through unconfined compressive strength (UCS) tests at 7 and 28 days, six dry-wet cycles, a 30-day water immersion test, pH test, swell rate test, XRD, SEM, and MIP analyses.

In an effort to mitigate or reverse the pathological progression of early-stage osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH), this study employed a promising strategy that involves the sustained delivery of osteogenic factors to augment core decompression, facilitated by the use of composite hydrogels. Specifically, a hydrogel was synthesized by blending chitosan, Pluronic F-127, and tripolyphosphate, utilizing both ionic bonding and copolymer micelle cross-linking techniques. This hydrogel demonstrated exceptional biocompatibility, temperature responsiveness, pH-dependent biodegradation, and controlled release properties.
