Solu: a cloud platform for real-time genomic pathogen surveillance.

BMC Bioinformatics

January 2025

Solu Healthcare Oy, Kalevankatu 31 A 13, 00100, Helsinki, Finland.

Background: Genomic surveillance is extensively used for tracking public health outbreaks and healthcare-associated pathogens. Despite advancements in bioinformatics pipelines, there are still significant challenges in terms of infrastructure, expertise, and security when it comes to continuous surveillance. The existing pipelines often require the user to set up and manage their own infrastructure and are not designed for continuous surveillance that demands integration of new and regularly generated sequencing data with previous analyses.

serovar Mbandaka, a prevalent foodborne pathogen, poses a threat to public health but remains poorly understood. We have determined the phylogenomic tree, genetic diversity, virulence, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) profiles on a large genomic scale to elucidate the evolutionary dynamics within the Mbandaka pan-genome. The polyphyletic nature of this serovar is characterized by two distinct phylogenetic groups and inter-serovar recombination boundaries, that potentially arising from recombination events at the H2-antigen loci.

Augmenting traditional genome-wide association studies (GWAS) with advanced machine learning algorithms can allow the detection of novel signals in available cohorts. We introduce "genome-wide association neural networks (GWANN)" a novel approach that uses neural networks (NNs) to perform a gene-level association study with family history of Alzheimer's disease (AD). In UK Biobank, we defined cases (n = 42 110) as those with AD or family history of AD and sampled an equal number of controls.

Developing highly efficient and cost-competitive electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), which can be applied to hydrogen production by water splitting, is of great significance in the future of the zero-carbon economy. Here, by means of first-principles calculations, we have scrutinized the HER catalytic capacity of single-atom catalysts (SACs) by embedding transition-metal atoms in the C and Mo vacancies of a tetragonal MoC slab, where the transition-metal atoms refer to Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and Cu. All the MoC-based SACs exhibit excellent electrical conductivity, which is favorable to charge transfer during HER.

Infectious diseases caused by bacteria are life-threating and are among the major causes of death in the world. Antibiotics have offered humans a new approach to infection control. Antibiotics are reckoned as the "magic bullets" for the fight against bacterial infections, therefore increasing life expectancy and decreasing mortality and morbidity.
