Background: Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a bilateral chronic, seasonally exacerbated inflammation of the ocular surface that especially affects male children and young boys.
Aim: To evaluate the corneal microscopic features of patients affected by VKC and to assess whether some corneal changes were associated with specific ocular symptoms and/or signs.
Methods: 20 children aged between 4 and 14 years were enrolled. All patients underwent corneal confocal microscopy by Confoscan CS3 (Nidek). 350 images of the central cornea of each eye were obtained with a ×40 noncontact lens 3,5 micron gap in automode.
Results: Some alterations of the sub-basal and stromal corneal nerves were detected. These alterations were more evident in patients with higher severity of photophobia. On the other hand, there were scarce other signs of the anterior segment of the eye.
Conclusions: Our preliminary findings show that there is another group of patients affected by VKC, characterized by an intense photophobia caused by corneal damage and without other significant ocular alterations. Therefore confocal microscopy may be useful for an early identification of corneal alterations before the onset of severe ocular symptoms and to set an appropriate therapeutic management.

Background: In China, stroke is the primary cause of adult death and disability. Because of the increased rate of blood vessel reperfusion, it is important to prevent cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury, in which glutamate (Glu) excitotoxicity plays a critical role. The most important Glu transporter, GLT-1, is essential for the regulation of Glu, which is dependent on Na-K-ATPase (NKA)-induced ion concentration gradient differences.

Background: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a degenerative joint disease characterized by synovial inflammation and fibrosis. Gentiopicroside (GPS), one of the main active ingredients of Gentiana macrophylla, is widely used in anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic therapies. However, the exact mechanism by which GPS treats synovial inflammation and fibrosis in KOA remains unclear.

Aim: To develop pH (pHe)-triggered membrane adhesive nanoliposome (pHTANL) of CD40a to enhance anti-tumor activity in pancreatic cancer while reducing systemic toxicity.
Materials And Methods: A small library of nanoliposomes (NL) with various lipid compositions were synthesized to prepare pH (pHe)-triggered membrane adhesive nanoliposome (pHTANL). Physical and functional characterization of pHTANL-CD40a was performed via dynamic light scattering (DLS), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), confocal microscopy, and flow cytometry.
Osteoarthritis, a major global cause of pain and disability, is driven by the irreversible degradation of hyaline cartilage in joints. Cartilage tissue engineering presents a promising therapeutic avenue, but success hinges on replicating the native physiological environment to guide cellular behavior and generate tissue constructs that mimic natural cartilage. Although electrical stimulation has been shown to enhance chondrogenesis and extracellular matrix production in 2D cultures, the mechanisms underlying these effects remain poorly understood, particularly in 3D models.

Endosomal entrapment significantly limits the efficacy of drug delivery systems. This study investigates sodium oleate-modified liposomes (SO-Lipo) as an innovative strategy to enhance endosomal escape and improve cytosolic delivery in 4T1 triple-negative breast cancer cells. We aimed to elucidate the mechanistic role of sodium oleate in promoting endosomal escape and compared the performance of SO-Lipo with unmodified liposomes (Unmodified-Lipo) and Aurein 1.
