Azo dyes and nitro-aromatic compounds are the largest group of pollutants released in the environment as industrial wastes. They create serious health and environmental problems. Azoreductases catalyze the reduction of azo dyes and nitro compounds to their respective amines. AN azoreductase was purified up to 12-fold from Lysinibacillus sphaericus using ion-exchange and size exclusion chromatography. It was optimally active at pH 7.4 and 75 °C. It was stable at 70 °C for 30 min. The purified enzyme utilized NADH rather than NADPH as an electron donor to reduce substrates. The molecular weight of the purified enzyme was ~29 kDa. The enzyme also acted as nitroreductase and could selectively reduce the nitro group of 2-nitrophenol, 4-nitrobenzoic acid, 2-nitro-benzaldehyde and 3-nitrophenol. Reduction products of these compounds were identified by IR and NMR.

Two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework sheets, in comparison to the 3D analogues, offer potential advantages for intercalation of guest components between the layers, exfoliation/dispersion into solutions, and processing into thin films. As a versatile platform for leveraging organic functions, the 2D Zr(IV)-carboxylate net here features a dendritic Sierpinski tritopic linker with conjugated alkyne branches and a photoactive triphenylamine core. The 2D solid can be easily dispersed in water and many other solvents, resulting in stable and fluorescent suspension for sensing nitro aromatic compounds and Fe ions with high quenching efficiencies and ultralow limits of detection.

Luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs) are a potential class of functional materials for the photoluminescent detection of a wide range of analytes as well as for the detection of pollutants in wastewater. Herein, by using the pillar-layered strategy, two new luminescence Zn-LMOFs ( and ) were successfully solvothermal synthesized. The 2D layers are both consisting of Zn and TPHC [TPHC = (1,1':2',1″-terphenyl)-3,3″,4,4',4″,5'-hexacarboxylic acid] ligands and then pillared by the different N-donor ligands to form the 3D Zn-LMOFs with topology.

Nitroreductases (NRs) are NAD(P)H-dependent flavoenzymes that reduce nitro aromatic compounds to their corresponding arylamines via the nitroso and hydroxylamine intermediates. Because of their broad substrate scope and versatility, NRs have found application in multiple fields such as biocatalysis, bioremediation, cell-imaging and prodrug activation. However, only a limited number of members of the broad NR superfamily (> 24 000 sequences) have been experimentally characterized.

The microbial agent technology has made significant progress in remediating nitro-aromatic compounds (NACs), such as -nitrophenol, 2,4-dinitrophenol, and 2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene, in farmland soil over the past decade. However, there are still gaps in our understanding of the bioavailability and degradation mechanisms of these compounds in low-temperature environments. In this review, we provide a comprehensive summary of the strategies employed by cold-adapted microorganisms and elucidate the degradation pathways of NACs pollutants.
