Background: Flow Cytometry (FCM) is still considered to be the method of choice for accurate CD4 enumeration. However, the use of FCM in developing countries is problematic due to their cost and complexity. Lower-cost technologies have been introduced. We evaluated CyFlow Counter together with its lyophilized reagents, and Pima CD4 in high-temperature area, using FACSCount as reference.

Materials And Methods: Whole blood samples were consecutively collected by venipuncture from 111 HIV+ patients and 17 HIV-negative donors. CD4 T-cell enumeration was performed on CyFlow Counter, Pima CD4 and FACSCount.

Results: CyFlow Counter and Pima CD4 systems showed good correlation with FACSCount (slope of 0.82 and 0.90, and concordance ρc of 0.94 and 0.98, respectively). CyFlow Counter showed absolute or relative biases (LOA) of -63 cells/mm(3) (-245 to 120) or -9.8% (-38.1 to 18.4) respectively, and Pima CD4 showed biases (LOA) of -30 cells/mm(3) (-160 to 101) or -3.5% (-41.0 to 33.9%). CyFlow Counter and Pima CD4 showed respectively 106.7% and 105.9% of similarity with FACSCount. According to WHO-2010 ART initiation threshold of 350 cells/mm(3), CyFlow Counter and Pima CD4 showed respectively sensibility of 100% and 97%, and specificity of 91% and 93%. CyFlow Counter and Pima CD4 were strongly correlated (slope of 1.09 and ρc of 0.95). These alternative systems showed good agreement with bias of 33 cells/mm(3) (-132 to 203) or 6.3% (-31.2 to 43.8), and similarity of 104.3%.

Conclusion: CyFlow Counter using CD4 easy count kit-dry and Pima CD4 systems can accurately provide CD4 T-cell counts with acceptable agreement to those of FACSCount.

Article Synopsis
  • * Significant reductions in various blood components were found in HIV-positive individuals, while their APAF-1 levels were elevated, especially in those with the lowest CD4+ counts.
  • * The findings suggest that APAF-1 may play a role in CD4+ cell depletion and could be used as a diagnostic biomarker to monitor HIV/AIDS progression.

Background: Children infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) may be more prone to helminthic infestation because they have depleted immunity, which increases their susceptibility to infection and infestations, even with minimally pathogenic organisms such as helminths.

Aim: The prevalence and pattern of intestinal helminthiasis among children living with HIV attending the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu.

Patients And Methods: A cross-sectional study in which 70 HIV-infected children were consecutively recruited from the Pediatric HIV clinic and matched for age and sex with 70 children recruited from the children outpatient clinic (CHOP) of UNTH Ituku-Ozalla.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the prevalence of oral candidiasis among people living with HIV (PLHIV) in Cameroon, differentiating between those on antiretroviral treatment (ART) and those who are ART-naive.
  • Results show a significantly higher occurrence of oral candidiasis in ART-naive patients (27.7%) compared to ART-experienced patients (6.3%), indicating a strong link between ART use and decreased incidence.
  • The findings highlight that immunodeficiency (CD4<200 cells/mm) and high viral loads (VL≥1000 copies/ml) contribute to the presence of oral candidiasis, emphasizing the need for management strategies for those experiencing immuno-virological failure.

Objective: This study was conducted to determine the relationship between their serum zinc levels and the CD4% in a cohort children living with HIV.

Methods: One hundred asymptomatic, anti-retroviral Therapy (ART) naïve children living with HIV (participants) aged 5-60 months who were enrolled into the Paediatric HIV clinic of The University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital were recruited in the study over a 10-month period. Blood samples were collected in the morning from non-fasting participants and serum zinc levels were analysed using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer.

Objectives: The present study aimed to evaluate CD4 cell counts, lipid profile, and oral manifestations in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients and their correlation with seronegative controls.

Materials And Methods: In this cross-sectional, hospital-based study, there were three groups of subjects: group A consisting of 500 healthy patients (controls), group B composed of 500 HIV-infected patients, and group C comprised of 500 AIDS patients based on their CD4 cell counts. CD4 cell counts were assessed using the CyFlow counter.
