Published: October 2013

Objective: This study examines whether mental and physical health relate differently to work ability and whether these associations vary with coping style.

Methods: A 1-year longitudinal study was conducted among 8842 employees aged 45 to 64 years from the Study on Transitions in Employment, Ability and Motivation. On-line questionnaires measured self-perceived mental and physical health at baseline and coping and work ability at follow-up. The data were analyzed using hierarchical regression analysis.

Results: Active coping and good mental and especially physical health predicted high work ability at follow-up. Avoidant coping was negatively related to work ability. Seeking support was unrelated to work ability. Interaction effects of coping and health on work ability were weak.

Conclusions: Successful coping styles and good health predict high work ability, and thus, promoting such factors can help improve sustainable employability.

Genetic and species rearrangements in microbial consortia impact biodegradation potential.

ISME J

Universidad Pablo de Olavide, Centro Andaluz de Biología del Desarrollo/ Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas/ Junta de Andalucía, Seville, Spain.

Genomic reorganisation between species and horizontal gene transfer have been considered the most important mechanism of biological adaptation under selective pressure. Still, the impact of mobile genes in microbial ecology is far from being completely understood. Here we present the collection and characterisation of microbial consortia enriched from environments contaminated with emerging pollutants, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Background: Marek's disease (MD) is a pathology affecting chickens caused by Marek's disease virus (MDV), an acute transforming alphaherpesvirus of the genus . MD is characterized by paralysis, immune suppression, and the rapid formation of T-cell (primarily CD4+) lymphomas. Over the last 50 years, losses due to MDV infection have been controlled worldwide through vaccination; however, these live-attenuated vaccines are non-sterilizing and potentially contributed to the virulence evolution of MDV field strains.

Selective Laser Sintering 3D Printing of Carvedilol Tablets: Enhancing Dissolution Through Amorphization.

Pharmaceutics

December 2024

Department of Pharmaceutical Technology and Cosmetology, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Belgrade, Vojvode Stepe 450, 11221 Belgrade, Serbia.

Background/objectives: Selective laser sintering (SLS) is one of the most promising 3D printing techniques for pharmaceutical applications as it offers numerous advantages, such as suitability to work with already approved pharmaceutical excipients, the elimination of solvents, and the ability to produce fast-dissolving, porous dosage forms with high drug loading. When the powder mixture is exposed to elevated temperatures during SLS printing, the active ingredients can be converted from the crystalline to the amorphous state, which can be used as a strategy to improve the dissolution rate and bioavailability of poorly soluble drugs. This study investigates the potential application of SLS 3D printing for the fabrication of tablets containing the poorly soluble drug carvedilol with the aim of improving the dissolution rate of the drug by forming an amorphous form through the printing process.

Iron (Fe) deficiency is among the most important agronomical concerns under alkaline conditions. Bicarbonate is considered an important factor causing Fe deficiency in dicot plants, mainly on calcareous soils. Current production systems are based on the use of high-yielding varieties and the application of large quantities of agrochemicals, which can cause major environmental problems.

Unlabelled: Honey is abundant in bioactive compounds, which demonstrate considerable therapeutic effects, particularly on oxidative stress and inflammation.

Objectives: This work sought to evaluate the antioxidant mechanisms of Manuka honey (MH) and Ohia Lehua honey (OLH), correlating them with phytochemical analyses in a rat model of experimentally induced inflammation.

Methods: The identification of polyphenolic compounds in the extracts was carried out using HPLC-ESI MS.
