Phenolic compounds can be efficiently O-methylated with tetramethylammonium chloride in diglyme or polyethyleneglycol (PEG) at temperatures of 150-160 °C and in the presence of either K2CO3 or NaOH. When applying benzyltrimethylammonium chloride as a reagent, the benzylation and methylation of phenols occurs, with the benzylation product always predominating. With allyl-substituted phenols as substrates and using NaOH as a base it was possible to achieve both the alkylation and the double-bond isomerization of the allyl group to obtain (E/Z)-propenyl-substituted methyl and benzyl aryl ethers in a single preparative step.

Magnetic supported ionic liquids are a unique subclass of ionic liquids that possess the ability to respond to external magnetic fields, combining the advantageous properties of traditional ILs with this magnetic responsiveness. A novel magnetic ionic nanocatalyst of FeO@SiO@CPTMS-DTPA was prepared by anchoring an ionic liquid, CPTMS-DTPA, onto the surface of silica-modified FeO. The morphology, chemical structure and magnetic property of the magnetic ionic nanocatalyst structure was characterized using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometer, and thermogravimetric analysis.

Sodium salt of aryl sulfinic acid reacts with enynone in a different manner, yielding α-furyl sulfone and stereodefined vinyl sulfone in toluene and EtOH respectively in the presence of ZnCl. The salient features of this protocol include chemoselectivity, broad substrate scope, high efficiency, high yield, and easy purification. The synthetic utilities of the products are demonstrated by cycloaddition and cis-trans photoisomerization reactions.

Sulfation plays a critical role in the biosynthesis of small molecules, regulatory mechanisms such as hormone signaling, and detoxification processes (phase II enzymes). The sulfation reaction is catalyzed by a broad family of enzymes known as sulfotransferases (SULTs), which have been extensively studied in animals due to their medical importance, but also in plant key processes. Despite the identification of some sulfated metabolites in fungi, the mechanisms underlying fungal sulfation remain largely unknown.

Selective Synthesis of Tetrahydroisoquinoline and Piperidine Scaffolds by Oxidative Ring Opening/Ring Closing Protocols of Substituted Indenes and Cyclopentenes.

December 2024

MTA TTK Lendület Artificial Transporter Research Group, Institute of Materials and Environmental Chemistry, HUN-REN Research Center for Natural Sciences, H-1117, Budapest, Magyar tudósok krt. 2, Hungary.

Novel tetrahydroisoquinoline and piperidine derivatives were selectively synthesized from substituted indenes or cyclopentenes. The process starts with an oxidative cleavage of the ring olefin bond, which gives reactive diformyl intermediates. By a ring-closing step using chiral (R) or (S) α-methylbenzylamine under a reductive amination protocol facilitated ring formation with ring expansion of the corresponding nitrogen-containing heterocycles.

Cytokinin Plays a Multifaceted Role in Ralstonia solanacearum-Triggered Plant Disease Development.

Mol Plant Pathol

State Key Laboratory of Crop Stress Resistance and High-Efficiency Production, College of Agronomy, Northwest A&F University, Yangling, China.

Cytokinin signalling plays both positive and negative roles in plant resistance to pathogens. It is not clear whether the role of cytokinin changes at the different stages of pathogen infection. Arabidopsis thaliana sequentially exhibits distinct root morphological symptoms during Ralstonia solanacearum infection, which offers a good system to investigate function of cytokinin in the whole pathogen infection process.
