Article Synopsis
  • A study aimed to see if 24-hour contact lens sensor (CLS) measurements could predict glaucoma progression in patients with normal-tension glaucoma (NTG).
  • The researchers tracked 79 patients over an average of 48 months, measuring intraocular pressure (IOP) and other factors to identify progression of the disease.
  • They found that factors like lower nocturnal ocular pulse amplitude, higher ranges of baseline IOP, and the presence of optic disc hemorrhage were significant indicators of glaucoma risk.

Advances and Challenges in Wearable Glaucoma Diagnostics and Therapeutics.

Bioengineering (Basel)

January 2024

Roski Eye Institute, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, 1450 San Pablo Street, Los Angeles, CA 90033, USA.

Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness, and early detection and treatment are crucial for preventing vision loss. This review aims to provide an overview of current diagnostic and treatment standards, recent medical and technological advances, and current challenges and future outlook for wearable glaucoma diagnostics and therapeutics. Conventional diagnostic techniques, including the rebound tonometer and Goldmann Applanation Tonometer, provide reliable intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement data at single-interval visits.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare 24-hour intraocular pressure (IOP) related fluctuations monitoring between 2 groups of visual field progression rates in patients with open angle glaucoma (OAG).

Methods: Cross-sectional study performed at Bordeaux University Hospital. Twenty-four-hour monitoring was performed using a contact lens sensor (CLS; Triggerfish; SENSIMED, Etagnières, Switzerland).

Background: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the outcome of deep sclerectomy (DS) as a secondary procedure following failed ab-interno XEN gel stent implantation in patients with open-angle glaucoma. Methods: Prospective, single-center, non-randomized, interventional study. Consecutive eyes that underwent mitomycin C (MMC) augmented XEN gel stent surgery, with uncontrolled intraocular pressure (IOP) or signs of disease progression, were included to undergo MMC-augmented DS.
