Published: November 2013

Pyridinium-grafted-cellulose nanocrystals were prepared by a simple one-pot reaction using 4-(1-bromoethyl/bromomethyl)benzoic acid, pyridine and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). The grafting consists of an esterification reaction between 4-(1-bromoethyl/bromomethyl)benzoic acid and CNCs and a nucleophilic attack on the C-Br bond of 4-(1-bromoethyl/bromomethyl)benzoic acid by pyridine. This reaction simplifies existing cationization methods, which leads to a higher grafting density while retaining the CNC crystallinity.

Cellulose-based luminescent materials are usually formed via either covalent attachment or combination with luminogens. In this work, three luminescent cellulose ethers without conventional luminophores have been homogeneously synthesized in a mixed solvent of tetra(n-butyl)ammonium hydroxide (TBAH)/dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The one obtained by etherifying microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) with 4-bromomethylbenzoic acid (BBA), i.

Temperature dependences of vapor pressures for 2-, 3-, and 4-bromobenzoic acid, as well as for five isomeric bromo-methylbenzoic acids were studied by the transpiration method. Melting temperatures and enthalpies of fusion for all isomeric bromo-methylbenzoic acids and 4-bromobenzoic acid were measured with a DSC. The molar enthalpies of sublimation and vaporization were derived.

Extended peptoids: a new class of oligomers based on aromatic building blocks.

Tetrahedron Lett

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of California Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz, CA 95064, U.S.A.

Peptoids (N-substituted polyglycines) represent a class of bioinspired oligomers that have unique physical and structural properties. Here we report the construction of "extended peptoids" based on aromatic building blocks, in which the N-alkylaminoacetyl group of the peptoid backbone has been replaced by an N-alkylaminomethylbenzoyl spacer. Both meta- and para-bromomethylbenzoic acids were synthesized, providing access to a new class of peptoids.
