Building on the framework recently reported for determining general response properties for frozen-density embedding [S. Höfener, A. S. P. Gomes, and L. Visscher, J. Chem. Phys. 136, 044104 (2012)], in this work we report a first implementation of an embedded coupled-cluster in density-functional theory (CC-in-DFT) scheme for electronic excitations, where only the response of the active subsystem is taken into account. The formalism is applied to the calculation of coupled-cluster excitation energies of water and uracil in aqueous solution. We find that the CC-in-DFT results are in good agreement with reference calculations and experimental results. The accuracy of calculations is mainly sensitive to factors influencing the correlation treatment (basis set quality, truncation of the cluster operator) and to the embedding treatment of the ground-state (choice of density functionals). This allows for efficient approximations at the excited state calculation step without compromising the accuracy. This approximate scheme makes it possible to use a first principles approach to investigate environment effects with specific interactions at coupled-cluster level of theory at a cost comparable to that of calculations of the individual subsystems in vacuum.

Electronic polarization and dispersion are decisive actors in determining interaction energies between molecules. These interactions have a particularly profound effect on excitation energies of molecules in complex environments, especially when the excitation involves a significant degree of charge reorganization. The direct reaction field (DRF) approach, which has seen a recent revival of interest, provides a powerful framework for describing these interactions in quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) models of systems, where a small subsystem of interest is described using quantum chemical methods and the remainder is treated with a simple MM force field.

A synthesis of a small library of fluorescent 1,4-dihydropyridine nucleoside analogues has been successfully carried out under solvent-free conditions a one-pot three-component Hantzsch condensation reaction. The process involved a Ba(NO) catalyzed solvent-free reaction between 3',5'-di--acetyl-5-formyl-2'-deoxyuridine, differently substituted β-keto ester and ammonium acetate under microwave irradiation. This facile methodology yielded the desired products with very high yields (86-96%) under solvent-free reaction conditions in a short reaction time, which was followed by a simple workup.

Intramolecular Charge Transfer in Antiaromatic Donor/Acceptor-Fused s-Indacenes.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and the Materials Science Institute, University of Oregon, Eugene, Oregon, 97403-1253, United States.

Herein we report the synthesis and characterization of four donor/acceptor-fused s-indacenes via the late-stage oxidation of a family of unsymmetrical benzofuran/benzothiophene-s-indacene regioisomers. A thorough study of their properties through experimental and computational analysis has revealed the effect of asymmetry on the molecular properties associated with antiaromaticity, as well as a strong correlation between antiaromaticity and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT). The strength of the charge transfer depends on the fusion orientation of the donor and acceptor motifs relative to the s-indacene core.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers synthesized dyes (MB1-MB5) through Knoevenagel condensation using different chemical precursors and characterized them with various analytical techniques like FT-IR and NMR for structural insights.
  • Spectroscopic analyses showed that MB2, MB3, and MB4 had unique properties such as solid-state and aggregation-induced emission, while some dyes (MB1, MB3, MB4) were sensitive to viscosity changes in polar solvents.
  • The study highlighted the dyes' acidochromism, solvatochromism, and excellent non-linear optical properties, especially MB1 and MB5, suggesting their potential applications in photonics, bioimaging, and sensor technologies.

Incorporation of BN units into π-conjugated organic compounds, as substitutes for specific CC couples, often leads to new hybrid materials with modified physical and chemical properties. Poly(p-phenylene iminoborane)s are derived from well-known poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) by replacement of the vinylene groups by B=N linking units. Herein, an unprecedented poly(p-phenylene iminoborane) is presented that features a strictly alternating sequence of BN units along the main chain.
