We report gas phase studies on NCO(-) fragment formation from the nucleobases thymine and uracil and their N-site methylated derivatives upon dissociative electron attachment (DEA) and through electron transfer in potassium collisions. For comparison, the NCO(-) production in metastable decay of the nucleobases after deprotonation in matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) is also reported. We show that the delayed fragmentation of the dehydrogenated closed-shell anion into NCO(-) upon DEA proceeds few microseconds after the electron attachment process, indicating a rather slow unimolecular decomposition. Utilizing partially methylated thymine, we demonstrate that the remarkable site selectivity of the initial hydrogen loss as a function of the electron energy is preserved in the prompt as well as the metastable NCO(-) formation in DEA. Site selectivity in the NCO(-) yield is also pronounced after deprotonation in MALDI, though distinctly different from that observed in DEA. This is discussed in terms of the different electronic states subjected to metastable decay in these experiments. In potassium collisions with 1- and 3-methylthymine and 1- and 3-methyluracil, the dominant fragment is the NCO(-) ion and the branching ratios as a function of the collision energy show evidence of extraordinary site-selectivity in the reactions yielding its formation.

The morphology of wheat starch granules with different damaged starch (DS) content was analyzed using a particle size analyzer and scanning electron microscopy (SEM); the granular structure was studied using FT-IR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD); and the granule-water interaction was evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic vapor sorption (DVS). The increase in the level of DS shifted the population of B-type granules towards larger particle diameters and shifted the population of A-type granules towards smaller particle diameters. The appearance of the surface of the starch-damaged granules was rough and flaky (SEM images).

The development of efficient catalysts for water electrolysis is crucial for advancing the low-carbon transition and addressing the energy crisis. This work involves the fabrication of graphene-based catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) by integrating NiFe-LDH and PbO onto graphene using plasma treatment. The plasma process takes only 30 min.

Coumarin compounds have heterocyclic core with different properties such as high quantum yields, broad Stokes shifts, and superior photophysical and biological activity. It is known that fluorescence properties increase with increased intramolecular charge transfer in systems where electron-withdrawing or donor groups are attached to different positions of the coumarin compound. When these compounds interact with analytes in the environment, the analytes in the environment can be detected by quenching or increasing fluorescence.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is an oncogenic virus associated with multiple lymphoid malignancies and autoimmune diseases. During infection in B cells, EBV uses its major glycoprotein gp350 to recognize the host receptor CR2, initiating viral attachment, a process that has lacked direct structural evidence for decades. In this study, we resolved the structure of the gp350-CR2 complex, elucidated their key interactions, and determined the site-specific N-glycosylation map of gp350.

This study provides a comprehensive investigation of antimicrobial additives (ZnO/AgNPs and SiO/AgNPs) on the properties of biodegradable ternary blends composed of poly(hydroxybutyrate) (PHB), poly(lactic acid) (PLA), and polycaprolactone (PCL) by examining the morphology, thermal stability, crystallinity index, and cell viability of these blends. Overall, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis revealed that AgNPs and SiO exhibited comparable sizes, whereas ZnO was significantly larger, which influences their release profiles and interactions with the blends. The addition of antimicrobials influences the rheology of the blends, acting as compatibilizers by reducing the intermolecular forces between biopolymers.
