Techniques for pontic site development usually involve various hard and soft tissue augmentation procedures. This article describes an alternative approach to developing a pontic site by using a root submergence technique for a screw-retained fixed dental prosthesis in the anterior maxilla.

Introduction: Following tooth extraction, there is comparatively more bone loss at the buccal aspect at 3 months of healing, which may result in 56% bone loss due to resorption of the bucco-facial ridge contour. In the socket shield technique, a tooth is planned for extraction in such a way that the tooth is sectioned in two halves, a palatal section is removed and the facial part is retained.
Materials And Methods: Twenty-six sites, i.

Hard and soft tissue remodelling after tooth extraction may result in a concave profile at the subsequent edentulous ridge. This defect may result in a sub-optimal aesthetic transition zone between the soft tissue and the pontic, which may appear to sit on the ridge, rather than emanating from within the ridge, as would a natural tooth. To optimise aesthetics, pontic site augmentation (PSA) (increasing the volume at the pontic site) and pontic site development (PSD) (remodelling the tissue at the pontic site) may provide a solution.

Objectives: To report on soft tissue contour changes at pontic sites with or without soft tissue grafting over an observation period of 15 years.
Methods: Fourteen patients received a fixed dental prosthesis (FDP) in the posterior zone in a controlled clinical study and were available at the 15-year follow-up. Eight patients received a subepithelial connective tissue graft in the pontic area (test) while six received the FDP without soft tissue grafting (control).

Background Advancements in computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) technology have significantly improved the accuracy and consistency of producing fixed partial dentures (FPDs) compared to traditional manual methods. However, the fully digital transfer of mock-up morphology to final FPDs is not yet fully explored. Proper pontic design, which avoids direct gingival contact, is essential for maintaining oral hygiene and preventing tissue irritation.

Dental implantology has been considered the mainstay in the rehabilitation of partial or complete edentulism. Nevertheless, complications and failures are occasionally encountered, and the most significant is the neurosensory disturbance. It not only causes persistent discomfort to the patient but frequently degrades the patient's oral health-related quality of life, even leading to a negative psychological impact.
