Kluyveromyces aestuarii, a potential environmental quality indicator yeast for mangroves in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Published: July 2011

Kluyveromyces aestuarii was found in sediments from 7 of 8 mangroves in Rio de Janeiro; and absent only at one site with heavy plastic bag pollution. Its presence suggests influence in other habitats from a mangrove and its absence in a mangrove suggests some non- fecal pollution or other habitat alteration.

[Molecular Polymorphism of β-Galactosidase LAC4 Genes in Dairy and Natural Strains of Kluyveromyces Yeasts].

The ability to ferment lactose is a characteristic peculiarity of dairy Kluyveromyces lactis yeasts; the vast majority of other yeast species are not able to assimilate this disaccharide. Molecular polymorphism of LAC4 genes encoding β-galactosidase controlling lactose fermentation is not well studied, and the published data concern only a single strain (K. lactis var.

Functional effects of phytate-degrading, probiotic lactic acid bacteria and yeast strains isolated from Iranian traditional sourdough on the technological and nutritional properties of whole wheat bread.

The lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and yeast strains with phytate degrading ability were isolated from Iranian traditional sourdough, and based on the acid and bile tolerance, three LAB and three yeast strains were selected and molecularly identified. In this study, baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) was considered as a positive control strain to investigate the nutritional and technological properties of the isolated strains. All of the identified microorganisms were characterized based on additional probiotic properties and were evaluated for nutritional and technological characteristics.

Seven strains of a novel Kluyveromyces species were isolated from seven water samples collected from a mangrove forest. Analysis of the D1/D2 domain of the large subunit (LSU) rRNA gene sequences revealed that the sequences of five strains (RS8(T), RS20, RS54, RV42 and RV89) were identical and differed from the other two strains (RS65 and RV153) by only one nucleotide substitution in 544 nucleotides (nt). The closest species in terms of pairwise sequences similarity was Kluyveromyces aestuarii, but the level of nucleotide substitution (six to seven nucleotide substitutions in 544 nt) was sufficient to justify the description of a separate species.

Robust NADH-regenerator: improved alpha-haloketone-resistant formate dehydrogenase.

Formate dehydrogenases (FDH) are useful for the regeneration of NADH, which is required for asymmetric reduction by several dehydrogenases and reductases. FDHs have relatively low activity and are labile, especially to alpha-haloketones, thus FDH cannot be applied to the industrial manufacture of optically active alpha-haloalcohols. To stabilize a FDH from Mycobacterium vaccae (McFDH) against the alpha-haloketone ethyl 4-chloroacetoacetate (ECAA), a set of cysteine-mutant enzymes was constructed.
