The newly identified tomato necrotic stunt virus (ToNStV), with a genome of 10,057 nucleotides, had 60 % nucleotide sequence and 70 % coat protein amino acid sequence identity to other potyviruses. Analysis of a second ToNStV isolate revealed two single nucleotide substitutions. ToNStV induced stunting and chlorotic to necrotic leaf symptoms on tomato plants. In host-range assays, ToNStV systemically infected many species in the family Solanaceae and locally infected some species in the families Amaranthaceae, Brassicaceae and Cucurbitaceae. A sensitive and reliable real-time RT-PCR assay was developed using simply prepared crude tissue extract.

Tomato is an important crop worldwide, but groundnut bud necrosis virus (GBNV) often hampers its growth. This study investigates the antiviral potential of bacterial endophytes, including CNEB54, CNEB4, CNEB26, and BAVE5 against GBNV, as well as their ability to enhance immunity and growth in tomato. All four bacterial isolates demonstrated a significant delay in GBNV symptom development 10 days post-inoculation, with disease incidence ranging from 18% to 36% compared to 84% in control.

This study characterized an endophytic fungus, DJE2023, isolated from healthy banana sucker of the cultivar (cv.) Dajiao. Its potential as a biocontrol agent against banana Fusarium wilt was assessed, aiming to provide a novel candidate strain for the biological control of the devastating disease.

Unlabelled: Continuous lighting (CL) has the potential to increase crop yield in greenhouse production. Tomato plants, however, when exposed to CL develop inter-vascular chlorosis, a leaf injury which causes a reduction in chlorophyll content and necrosis. The application of biochar can reduce physiological stress in plants, we examine if biochar also reduces necrosis in tomatoes when grown under CL.

Sunflower is a short-season crop of the Asteraceae family and the Helianthus genus and is the fourth most important oilseed crop in the world. During a field campaign, unusual symptoms (necrosis and longitudinal cracking of the petiole) were observed in a sunflower crop grown in the region of Kavarna (Dobrich district, Bulgaria) and strains of the genus Xanthomonas were isolated. Results based on phylogenetic and phylogenomic analyses showed that they clustered with Xanthomonas euroxanthea CPBF 424T species, a pathogenic strain isolated from walnut buds in Portugal and responsible for causing walnut bacterial blight (WBB).
