Published: October 2013

A three-dimensional structure consisting of poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) nanofibers covered by periodically spaced PCL crystal lamellae, a self-induced nanohybrid shish-kebab (SINSK) structure, was created using electrospinning followed by a self-induced crystallization. The resulting structure that resembles the nanotopography of natural collagen nanofibrils in the extracellular matrix (ECM) of human tissues could serve as a tissue engineering scaffold. The formation mechanism of the self-induced shish-kebab structure was investigated with real-time observation of the crystallization process. Electrospun polylactic acid (PLA)/PCL nanofibers were also employed as shish elements to study the effects of different shish materials. The results show that the geometric dimensions of the shish-kebabs are highly related to the initial concentration of PCL solution. The shish material played an important role in the creation of shish-kebab structure. Cell assays with NIH 3T3 ECACC fibroblasts suggest that the nanotopography of the nanofiber surface with kebab crystals that mimic collagen fibrils facilitated the cell attachment and spreading of 3T3 fibroblasts cells.

Electrospun nanofibrous scaffolds are renowned for their ability to mimic the microstructure of the extracellular matrix (ECM). However, they often fail to replicate the geometry of target tissues, and the biocompatibility of these scaffolds those made from synthetic polymers is always limited due to the lack of cell binding sites. To address these issues, we proposed an innovative approach that combined unidirectional freeze-drying and electrospinning.

Article Synopsis
  • High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is a popular plastic known for its good performance but has limitations due to its mechanical strength.
  • This study introduces PA6 as a modifier for HDPE, using vibration during injection molding to enhance its properties.
  • The results show significant improvements in tensile strength, tensile modulus, and surface hardness, leading to a high-performance HDPE product that could broaden its application possibilities.

Green and biodegradable materials with great mechanical properties and biocompatibility will offer new opportunities for next-generation high-performance biological materials. Herein, the novel oriented shish kebab crystals of a novel poly(trimethylene carbonate-lactide-glycolide) (PTLG) vascular stent are first reported to be successfully fabricated through a feasible solid-state drawing process to simultaneously enhance the mechanical performance and biocompatibility. The crystal structure of this self-reinforced vascular stent was transformed from spherulites to a shish kebab crystal, which indicates the mechanical interlocking effect and prevents the lamellae from slipping with a significant improvement of mechanical strength to 333 MPa.

Herein, inspired by fruit, the shish-kebab-like growth of ZnO on carbon urchin (ZnO@CU) was designed using microwave radiation, thus leading to a hierarchal 3D structure that can promote multiple internal reflections through polarization centers. This hierarchal structure was then dispersed in a designer polyetherimide (PEI) matrix containing dynamic covalent bonds that can undergo metathesis, triggered by temperature, to harness self-healing properties in the composite. Such key attributes are required for their potential use in EMI shielding applications where frequent repairs are indispensable.

Biopolymer grafts often have limited biocompatibility, triggering excessive inflammatory responses similar to foreign bodies. Macrophage phenotype shifts are pivotal in the inflammatory response and graft success. The effects of the morphology and physical attributes of the material itself on macrophage polarization should be the focus.
