Background: The 2012 and 2013 solid organ transplantation statistics were presented during the annual meeting of the Belgian Transplant Society.

Cranio-cerebral erosion is a well-known complication of calvarian fracture with underlying dural tear and cerebral injury in infancy and early childhood. The anatomy, pathogenesis and natural evolution of these lesions remain obscure. The common clinical symptoms are seizures, focal neurological deficits, impairment of consciousness and a soft subgaleal mass.

Seventeen cases of cranio-cerebral erosion were subjected to detailed histopathological study in order to get a better insight into the pathogenesis of this lesion. It was found that the bone and brain at the site and edge of the defect show not only evidence of damage at the time of initial injury, but also of "active" progressive damage months and years later. The possible causes for continuing damage to the brain and bone are discussed.
