A portable quartz crystal micro balance for physical vapor deposition techniques is presented. The device is used for the calibration of evaporators employed in the preparation of thin film systems that are studied in surface science. The design is based upon a portable sample setup, highly versatile and customizable. It can be transported within an ultrahigh vacuum system, stored in a sample garage and be used in front of different evaporators. Details of the setup are described. Finally, the performance of the device is demonstrated and compared to scanning tunneling microscopy measurements.

Forensic gemstone analysis faces many challenges. One of the most critical aspects of gemological research is the classification of a gemstone. It is necessary to understand the mineral species, purity, origin, and identification of treatments to identify and classify a gem correctly, as well as assign a monetary value to it.

A compact and portable gas sensor based on quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) for the detection of methane (C1), ethane (C2), and propane (C3) in natural gas (NG)-like mixtures is reported. An interband cascade laser (ICL) emitting at 3367 nm is employed to target absorption features of the three alkanes, and partial least-squares regression analysis is employed to filter out spectral interferences and matrix effects characterizing the examined gas mixtures. Spectra of methane, ethane, and propane mixtures diluted in nitrogen are employed to train and test the regression algorithm, achieving a prediction accuracy of ∼98%, ∼96%, and ∼93% on C1, C2, and C3, respectively.

The forensic Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) fingerprinting is a tool for investigating crime scenes by identifying/tracing criminals and linking crime scenes. However, in cases where experts are unable to detect and identify any biological traces or human-derived cells at the crime scene or while testing the samples in the laboratories, all the advantages offered by forensic laboratories lose their significance. It becomes a waste of time, effort, and resources allocated to these laboratories.

Respiratory interventions including noninvasive ventilation, continuous positive airway pressure and high-flow nasal oxygen generated infectious aerosols may increase risk of airborne disease (SARS-CoV-2, influenza virus) transmission to healthcare workers. We developed and tested a prototype portable UV-C device to sterilize high flows of viral-contaminated air from a simulated patient source at airflow rates of up to 100 l/m. Our device consisted of a central quartz tube surrounded 6 high-output UV-C lamps, within a larger cylinder allowing recirculation past the UV-C lamps a second time before exiting the device.

As semiconductor technology advances toward miniaturization and portability, thin films with excellent thermoelectric performance have garnered increasing attention, particularly for applications in self-powered devices and temperature-responsive sensors. The high Seebeck coefficient of SnSe thin films makes them promising for temperature sensing, but their poor electrical conductivity limits their potential as thermoelectric generators. In this work, high-quality -axis oriented SnSe thin films were deposited on quartz substrates by using magnetron sputtering.
