The astroviral infections are considered among the most common pathogens of gastroenteritis in children. The incidence, molecular epidemiology and clinical manifestations of the astrovirus infection in children hospitalized with acute gastroenteritis, in various areas of the Russian Federation from 2004 to 2010 was determined.

As astroviral infection rapidly increased in the summer of 2022 in Korea, this study aimed to determine the cause and genotype of astroviruses during this period. From January to December 2022, we tested 43,312 stool samples from patients with acute gastroenteritis utilizing multiplex PCR to detect HAstV. For the HAstV-positive samples, we determined the genotypes of the HAstVs by PCR and sequencing.

Unlabelled: Metagenomic shotgun sequencing (mNGS) can serve as a generic molecular diagnostic tool. An mNGS proficiency test (PT) was performed in six European veterinary and public health laboratories to detect porcine astroviruses in fecal material and the extracted RNA. While different mNGS workflows for the generation of mNGS data were used in the different laboratories, the bioinformatic analysis was standardized using a metagenomic read classifier as well as read mapping to selected astroviral reference genomes to assess the semiquantitative representation of astrovirus species mixtures.

Background: Astroviral infections commonly cause acute nonbacterial gastroenteritis in children globally. However, these infections often go undiagnosed outside of research settings. Astroviruses (AstVs) are small RNA viruses characterized by a high mutation rate, the ability to recombine, and interspecies transmission, which allows them to infect a multitude of hosts including humans, companion animals, and farmed animals as well as wildlife. AstVs are stable in the environment, and their transmission is usually through the fecal-oral route or via contaminated water and food. Although direct zoonotic transmission was not confirmed, interspecies transmission events have occurred or have been indicated to occur in the past between wild and domestic animals and humans.

Neurological diseases in cattle can be caused by several infectious agents. Astroviruses are increasingly recognized as the causative agent of encephalitis in various animals, including humans. In this study, a neuroinvasive astrovirus (BoAstV 20B05) was discovered in the brain tissues of an 81-month-old Korean native cattle with neurological symptoms.
