We report on the far- and mid-infrared reflectivity of NdMnO3 from 4 to 300 K. Two main features are distinguished in the infrared spectra: active phonons in agreement with expectations for the orthorhombic [Formula: see text]-Pbnm (Z = 4) space group remaining constant down to 4 K and a well defined collective excitation in the THz region due to eg electrons in a d-orbital fluctuating environment. We trace its origin to the NdMnO3 high-temperature orbital disordered intermediate phase not being totally dynamically quenched at lower temperatures. This results in minute orbital misalignments that translate into randomized non-static eg electrons within orbitals yielding a room-temperature collective excitation. Below TN ∼ 78 K, electrons gradually localize, inducing long-range magnetic order as the THz band condenses into two modes that emerge pinned to the A-type antiferromagnetic order. They harden simultaneously down to 4 K, obeying power laws with TN as the critical temperature and exponents β ∼ 0.25 and β ∼ 0.53, as for a tri-critical point and Landau magnetic ordering, respectively. At 4 K they match known zone center spin wave modes. The power law dependence is concomitant with a second order transition in which spin modes modulate orbital instabilities in a magnetoelectric hybridized orbital-charge-spin-lattice scenario. We also found that phonon profiles also undergo strong changes at TN ∼ 78 K due to magnetoelasticity.

Atomic nuclei serve as prime laboratories for investigations of complex quantum phenomena, where minor nucleon rearrangements cause significant structural changes. Pb is the heaviest known neutron-deficient Pb isotope that can exhibit three distinct shapes: prolate, oblate, and spherical, with nearly degenerate excitation energies. Here we report on the combined results from three state-of-the-art measurements to directly observe these deformations in Pb.

The breaking of inversion symmetry combined with spin-orbit coupling, can give rise to intrigu- ing quantum phases and collective excitations. Here, we report systematic temperature dependent Raman scattering and theoretical calculations of phonon modes across the inversion symmetry- breaking structural transitions in a quasi-one-dimensional compound (TaSe4)3I. Our investigation revealed the emergence of three additional Raman-active modes in Raman spectra of the low- temperature (LT) non-centrosymmetric (NC) structure of the material.

Human and non-human primate studies clearly implicate the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) as critical for advanced cognitive functions. It is thought that intracortical synaptic architectures within the dlPFC are the integral neurobiological substrate that gives rise to these processes. In the prevailing model, each cortical column makes up one fundamental processing unit composed of dense intrinsic connectivity, conceptualized as the "canonical" cortical microcircuit.

Photophysical properties of condensed systems generally originate from collective contributions of all components in their stochastically fluctuated structures and are strongly influenced under strain of chromophores. To precisely identify how the stochastically fluctuated monomers synergistically manipulate the properties, we propose a statistic strategy over sufficient ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) samplings and for the first time uncover that synergistic oscillatory twisting (SOT) of neighboring under-strain monomers manipulates the bifunction of rubrene crystal. The under-strain trunk SOT can regulate both singlet fission (SF) and triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA), enabling their coexistence and dominance switching by dynamically modulating the matching of excitation energies.

We consider a problem of nonlinear response to an external electromagnetic radiation in conventional disordered superconductors which contain a small amount of weak magnetic impurities. We focus on the diffusive limit and use Usadel equation to analyze the excitation energy and dispersion relation of the collective modes. We determine the resonant frequency and dispersion of both amplitude (Schmidt-Higgs) and phase (Carlson-Goldman) modes for moderate strength of magnetic scattering.
