Marginal log-linear (MLL) models provide a flexible approach to multivariate discrete data. MLL parametrizations under linear constraints induce a wide variety of models, including models defined by conditional independences. We introduce a subclass of MLL models which correspond to Acyclic Directed Mixed Graphs (ADMGs) under the usual global Markov property. We characterize for precisely which graphs the resulting parametrization is variation independent. The MLL approach provides the first description of ADMG models in terms of a minimal list of constraints. The parametrization is also easily adapted to sparse modelling techniques, which we illustrate using several examples of real data.

Background: It is unknown whether perioperative and functional outcomes of Retzius-sparing robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RS-RARP) may be affected by large prostate sizes (PS).
Methods: All patients treated with RS-RARP were identified and compared according to PS. The definition of PS relied on the prostatic weight at final pathology (PS < 100 g vs ≥ 100 g).

Background: COVID-19 has triggered a global public health crisis, and had an impact on economies, societies, and politics around the world. Based on the pathogen prevalence hypothesis suggested that residents of areas with higher infection rates are more likely to be collectivists as compared with those of areas with lower infection rates. Many researchers had studied the direct link between infectious diseases and individualism/collectivism (infectious diseases→ cultural values), but no one has focused on the specific psychological factors between them: (infectious diseases→ cognition of the pandemic→ cultural values).

Background: Whether natural selection may have attributed to the observed blood group frequency differences between populations remains debatable. The ABO system has been associated with several diseases and recently also with susceptibility to COVID-19 infection. Associative studies of the RhD system and diseases are sparser.

Genitourinary surgeons and oncologists are particularly interested in whether a robotic surgery improves times to Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) recurrence compared to a non-robotic surgery for removing the cancerous prostate. Time to PSA recurrence is an example of a survival time that is typically interval-censored between two consecutive clinical inspections with opposite test results. In addition, success of medical devices and technologies often depends on factors such as experience and skill level of the medical service providers, thus leading to clustering of these survival times.

Health inequities are assessed by health departments to identify social groups disproportionately burdened by disease and by academic researchers to understand how social, economic, and environmental inequities manifest as health inequities. To characterize inequities, group-specific small-area health data are often modeled using log-linear generalized linear models (GLM) or generalized linear mixed models (GLMM) with a random intercept. These approaches estimate the same marginal rate ratio comparing disease rates across groups under standard assumptions.
